Text to ASCII Converter: Transforming Words into Artistic Characters

This tool converts typed text into decimal character codes. Each character is replaced by its numeric code point and the numbers are separated by spaces. The output updates as you type, so there is no separate convert button.

It is a character-code converter, not an ASCII-art generator. It does not draw pictures from letters. It shows the numeric values behind the text, which is useful for debugging, teaching and checking exactly which characters a string contains.

The page uses JavaScript's charCodeAt, so the result follows UTF-16 code units rather than a strict 7-bit ASCII table. Plain English letters and digits map to familiar ASCII values; accented letters, symbols and emoji can produce larger numbers.

What the converter does

The page has two panels: an editable Standard Text area and a read-only ASCII Code area. Every input event reads the text, converts each character to a number and joins the numbers with single spaces.

For example, AB becomes 65 66. A space becomes 32, a comma becomes 44 and a newline becomes 10. The output is one long line even when the input contains several lines, because the line breaks are converted to numbers rather than preserved as separators.

There are no options for base, separator or padding. The conversion is fixed. Use Copy to take the result, Clear to reset both panels, or Paste to bring text in from the clipboard.

ASCII codes versus ASCII art

ASCII art uses characters such as slashes, dots and hashes to approximate a picture. This page does not do that. It returns the numeric code for each character, so the output is a sequence of numbers rather than a visual pattern.

The distinction matters when you search for a text-to-ASCII tool. If you need a banner or an image made from characters, you need an ASCII-art generator. If you need the code behind each character, this converter is the right tool.

The page also does not render an image from the codes. It only shows the decimal values. A separate ASCII-to-text tool is needed to turn the numbers back into characters.

How the encoding works

JavaScript strings are sequences of UTF-16 code units. charCodeAt returns the numeric value of one code unit. For basic Latin letters, digits and punctuation, those values match the ASCII table.

Characters outside the basic range can produce values above 127. For example, an accented letter may return a value in the 128 to 255 range, while many non-Latin characters return thousands. The converter does not transliterate them to plain English.

Emoji are often represented by two code units, so one visible symbol can produce two numbers. That is a property of UTF-16, not a bug in the page. If you need Unicode code points rather than code units, use a tool that explicitly reports code points.

Spaces, punctuation and line breaks

Spaces are characters too. A single space becomes 32. Multiple spaces produce multiple 32 values, which lets you see indentation or accidental double spacing that is hard to notice in normal text.

Punctuation has its own codes: a period is 46, a comma is 44, a question mark is 63 and an exclamation mark is 33. Quotes, apostrophes and dashes may use different values depending on whether they are straight or typographic characters.

A newline becomes 10. Because the output joins every code with a space, you cannot tell from the numbers alone whether a gap came from a space or a line break unless you compare the original text. Keep the source alongside the output if that distinction matters.

How to use it

Type or paste text into the Standard Text panel. The ASCII Code panel updates immediately. If you paste from a word processor, watch for smart quotes, non-breaking spaces and other characters that look ordinary but have different codes.

Use Copy to place the numeric sequence on the clipboard. Use Clear to empty both panels. If you need to convert a large block, check the beginning and end of the output for unexpected values.

To reverse the process, use an ASCII-to-text converter and paste the numbers with their separators. This page does not include a decode mode.

Practical uses

Developers use character codes to debug whitespace, invisible characters and encoding problems. Seeing a 160 instead of a 32, for example, can explain why a string comparison fails even though the text looks identical.

Teachers use the converter to show the relationship between characters and numbers. A simple word becomes a sequence of values that can be compared with an ASCII table. It is a concrete way to introduce character encoding.

The output can also be used in puzzles, tests or data fixtures where a numeric representation is easier to store than the original characters. Just remember that the result is decimal, not hexadecimal or binary.

Limits and caveats

There is no declared length limit. Very large inputs can make the page slow because every character is converted and joined into one string. For a huge document, convert a sample or use a script.

The result is based on UTF-16 code units, not on a strict ASCII-only mapping. Non-ASCII text may produce values that are not part of the original ASCII standard. The page does not warn about that.

The converter does not preserve line structure in the output, add separators between lines, or decode numbers back to text. It also does not save the result. Copy it before leaving the page.

Character codes in other numbering systems

The page returns decimal values. Programmers often work in hexadecimal, where 65 becomes 41, or in binary, where it becomes 1000001. The converter does not switch bases, but you can convert each decimal value with a base converter if you need another representation.

Decimal is useful for teaching because it is familiar. Hexadecimal is common in debugging and colour work. Binary is useful for bit-level explanations. Keep the base clear when you share a code list; a number such as 41 means different things in decimal, hex and ASCII contexts.

Checking invisible characters

Some of the most useful checks involve characters you cannot see: non-breaking spaces, tabs, carriage returns and zero-width characters. The numeric output makes them visible as values rather than blanks.

A tab typically appears as 9, a newline as 10 and a carriage return as 13. A non-breaking space may appear as 160. If two strings look identical but fail a comparison, compare their code sequences to find the hidden difference.

The page does not label the characters for you. Keep a small ASCII reference nearby, or convert the suspicious value back to text in a separate tool.

A short worked example

Take the word Cat. C is 67, a is 97 and t is 116, so the output is 67 97 116. The capital C and lowercase a have different codes. That is why case changes the numeric result even when the word looks the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Kurze Antworten auf die Fragen, die Nutzer stellen, bevor sie dem Ergebnis vertrauen.

No. It converts each character to its numeric code. ASCII art is a different kind of tool that draws pictures with characters.

32 is the decimal code for the space character. Every space in the input produces another 32 in the output.

A newline becomes 10. The output joins all codes with spaces, so the original line structure is not visible in the numbers alone.

JavaScript uses UTF-16 code units, and many emoji require two code units. The converter reports each unit separately.

Not on this page. Use a separate ASCII-to-text converter and keep the numbers separated so they can be parsed.

It accepts them, but it reports their UTF-16 code-unit values rather than transliterating them to ASCII. The numbers may be much larger than 127.

No. The conversion runs in the browser and is cleared when you reload the page.
