HEIF To GIF Converter
Convert a HEIF or HEIC image into a genuine GIF for systems that only take GIF. Load one file up to 100 MB and download the result, all inside your browser. The heic2any library encodes the GIF at full size with up to 256 colours, so photos can show some banding; this page explains when that matters.

Before You Convert HEIF to GIF
The HEIF to GIF Converter takes a single HEIF or HEIC file and saves it as a real GIF, without uploading it anywhere. It is meant for the occasional system that will only take a GIF. Before using it, it is worth asking whether GIF is really what you need, because for photographs it rarely is: the format is limited to 256 colours, which this page explains plainly below.

Quick Decision Guide
| If you need... | Best tool |
|---|---|
| A small photo for email, web or a form | HEIF to JPEG Converter |
| An exact, editable copy | HEIF to PNG Converter |
| A genuine GIF for a system that accepts nothing else | This page |
| An animated loop | Only if the HEIF itself stores an image sequence; there are no animation controls here |
How the GIF File Is Produced
The page decodes your HEIF file with the open-source heic2any library to show the preview. For the download it asks heic2any for image/gif output, and the library encodes the GIF itself with its bundled encoder (gifshot). The download is named your-file.gif and contains genuine GIF data, at the full pixel size of the decoded image.
Because the file really is a GIF, viewers, browsers and upload forms that check the file header identify it correctly. The trade-off is the GIF format itself: at most 256 colours and a file that is usually much larger than the HEIF. If the destination accepts PNG or JPEG, those formats keep the photo's full colour range.
About HEIF Sequences and Animation
HEIF can store image sequences, and GIF is famous for animation, so it is natural to hope one turns into the other. According to the heic2any documentation, a file that holds an image sequence is turned into an animated GIF when GIF output is requested. This page adds no frame-rate, loop or palette settings of its own, and an ordinary single photo gives a still GIF. The preview on the left shows one image only.
Operating the Converter
- Pick the file using Browse File, or drag it into the dashed zone reading "Drop HEIC/HEIF photo here". It must be named
.heifor.heicand weigh 100 MB or less. - Watch the progress text change from "Decoding HEIC..." as the file is read. The details card then lists the name, Original Size and Dimensions.
- Note that the format grid is locked: GIF is selected and the other choices are disabled. No quality slider appears.
- Wait for the conversion to finish, then compare the Original and Converted previews and read the Converted Size and Size Change figures.
- Click Download to save the
.giffile, or Convert Another to start over.
Systems That Still Ask for GIF
GIF requests today mostly come from software that has not been updated in a long time: older bulletin boards, legacy website builders, some e-learning platforms, internal tools at large organisations, and hobby programs for crafts or retro computing. Some of these check the real file type, which a genuine GIF passes. Test one file in the destination before converting a large number, because some also limit dimensions or file size.
What GIF Does to a Photograph
It helps to know why photographers avoid GIF. The format stores each frame with a palette of at most 256 colours. A typical photo contains tens of thousands of distinct shades, so a real GIF encoder has to pick the 256 most useful ones and fake the rest with dithering, a pattern of dots that tricks the eye. Skies turn into visible bands, skin tones look grainy, and file sizes for detailed scenes are often larger than a good JPEG. GIF remains excellent for small graphics with few colours and for short animations, which is why it survives, but it was never designed for camera photos.
The file this page gives you is a true GIF, so expect exactly that palette effect on photos with smooth gradients. For logos, screenshots and flat graphics stored as HEIF, the 256-colour limit is rarely noticeable.
Checking Whether the Destination Will Accept It
- Convert one representative image and download it.
- Upload it to the target system and view it there, not only in the upload dialog.
- If it is accepted and displays correctly, convert the rest one at a time with Convert Another.
- If it is refused with a format error, look in the system's help pages for other accepted types; JPEG and PNG are commonly allowed even where the instructions only mention GIF.
Your Data Stays Local
There is no server step in this conversion. The HEIF image is read, decoded and encoded as GIF entirely in the browser tab, so personal photos are not transmitted for processing. The GIF is built from the decoded pixels and contains no EXIF details, so location and camera information from the original are not included.
Practical Advice
- Shrink large photos in an editor after conversion if the destination expects a small avatar or banner, since this tool keeps the full resolution.
- If an upload fails with a "file too large" or dimension complaint, resize the photo first; a full-size GIF of a camera photo is big.
- Keep the HEIF original; it is the better-quality and smaller master file.
- Use a desktop browser for very large HEIF files, as decoding is done by your own device.
Things This Page Will Not Do
- Offer frame-rate, loop or frame-selection controls, or turn Live Photo video into a loop.
- Let you choose the GIF palette, colour count or dithering.
- Process several files in one go. A multi-file selection uses only the first file.
- Accept HEIF-family files with other extensions, such as
.hif. - Guarantee that the clipboard Copy button works; browsers decide which image types may be copied.
Limitations in Brief
- Maximum file size: 100 MB.
- One still image per conversion.
- Output is a GIF with at most 256 colours, at the full pixel size of the decoded image.
- Broken or truncated files end with a decode error message.
