HEIC To GIF Converter
Convert a HEIC photo into a genuine GIF for older forums and legacy systems that only accept GIF. Load one HEIC or HEIF file up to 100 MB and download the result. It runs in your browser without uploading: the heic2any library encodes the GIF at full size with up to 256 colours, so photos can show some banding.

HEIC to GIF: What This Page Is For
Some places on the web still ask for a GIF. Old forum software, legacy intranet pages, certain email signature builders and a few school or office systems were written when GIF was the default image type, and they never learned to read anything newer, let alone Apple's HEIC. The HEIC to GIF Converter exists for that narrow job: take a HEIC photo from an iPhone or iPad and save it as a genuine GIF file that such a system will accept.
This page is locked to GIF. In the "Convert to format" grid, every other option is disabled and a notice states that output is fixed to GIF. Read the section below on how the GIF is made, because the GIF format itself changes how a photo looks.

How the GIF File Is Made
This converter works without a server. When you load a photo, the heic2any library decodes it in your browser to show the preview. For the GIF output, the page asks heic2any for image/gif directly, and the library builds the file with its bundled GIF encoder (gifshot). The result is a real GIF: it starts with the GIF file signature, so systems that check the file contents, not just the extension, recognise it as GIF.
What that means in practice:
- The GIF keeps the full pixel dimensions of your photo; nothing is scaled down.
- GIF stores at most 256 colours, so smooth gradients such as skies or skin can show banding or a dotted dither pattern. That is a property of the format, not a fault in the conversion.
- There is no quality slider and no palette or dithering setting; the encoder decides the palette.
- A full-size GIF of a detailed photo is usually much larger than the HEIC original.
If the destination accepts JPEG or PNG at all, use the HEIC to JPEG Converter or the HEIC to PNG Converter instead; they keep the photo's full colour range. Use this page where GIF is the only format allowed.
GIF Versus Modern Formats at a Glance
| Feature | GIF (the format) | HEIC |
|---|---|---|
| Colours per frame | Up to 256 from a palette | Millions, with 8-bit or higher depth |
| Animation | Yes | Image sequences possible, rarely used on iPhone stills |
| Typical use today | Short loops, reactions, very old systems | Camera photos on Apple devices |
| Photo suitability | Poor; gradients band and dither | Excellent |
An ordinary iPhone photo gives a still GIF. heic2any's documentation says that a HEIC holding an image sequence is turned into an animated GIF, and this page has no frame, timing or loop controls of its own. A Live Photo's motion is stored in a separate video file, so it does not become a loop here.
Steps
- Open the page on any modern desktop or mobile browser.
- Select your photo with Browse File or drag it onto "Drop HEIC/HEIF photo here". Only names ending in
.heicor.heifare accepted, and the limit is 100 MB. - Wait while the status reads "Decoding HEIC...". The original preview, file name, Original Size and Dimensions then appear.
- When the Converted preview shows, check the Converted Size and Size Change lines.
- Click Download. The file keeps its base name with a new extension, for example
IMG_2207.HEICbecomesIMG_2207.gif. - Click Convert Another to reset and process another picture.
Where a GIF-Named File Still Helps
- Forum avatars and signatures on older message-board engines that whitelist
.gif. - Legacy content management systems inside companies or schools that predate HEIC.
- Craft and hobby software, such as some embroidery or label programs, that import GIF but not newer formats.
- Retro-style websites and personal pages built around GIF assets.
Getting the HEIC File Off Your iPhone
How you move the photo matters, because some transfer methods convert it for you and others keep the original HEIC. AirDrop to a Mac, iCloud Photos downloads with "Keep Originals" selected, and a USB cable import with the iPhone's "Transfer to Mac or PC" option set to "Keep Originals" all deliver real HEIC files, which is what this page expects. Emailing a photo from the Photos app or picking "Automatic" for transfers may already give you a JPEG, in which case you do not need a HEIC converter at all. If you want future photos to be JPEG from the start, the iPhone camera's Formats setting has a "Most Compatible" option.
Once the file is on your computer, check its extension. If it ends in .HEIC, you are ready; the tool accepts upper and lower case.
Privacy and Processing
Nothing about your photo is uploaded during conversion. Decoding and GIF encoding both run on your own device, which also means the conversion speed depends on your device's processor and memory. Because the image is re-encoded, the original EXIF metadata, including location, is not carried into the output.
Recommended Practice
- Test the downloaded file in the actual destination before converting a whole set of photos.
- If the system rejects it, try a JPEG or PNG version; many "GIF only" fields in fact accept those too.
- Resize or crop large photos in an editor afterwards if the destination expects a small avatar or icon; this tool keeps the original pixel dimensions.
- Keep the HEIC original. The converted copy is for compatibility only.
What Not to Expect
- No frame timing or looping controls.
- No colour-palette options, dithering settings or quality slider.
- No batch mode: a multi-file selection uses the first file only.
Limitations Summary
- One still image per run, maximum 100 MB, recognised by file extension.
- Colour is limited to the 256-colour GIF palette.
- Output dimensions match the decoded photo; large camera photos produce large files.
- The Copy button relies on browser clipboard support and may be refused; Download always works.
- Error messages to watch for: "Please select a valid HEIC or HEIF file." for the wrong extension, "File too large. Please select a file under 100MB." for oversized files, and "Failed to decode HEIC/HEIF file. It may be corrupted." for damaged files.
For HEIF-named files from cameras or Android phones, the HEIF to GIF Converter behaves the same way.
Reading the Result and Checking What You Downloaded
After conversion the result panel shows a format badge, the Converted Size and a Size Change line. The badge reads GIF, the format this page produces. Size Change compares the new file with your original HEIC: green "smaller" text means the output shrank, while amber "larger" text means it grew. Expect "larger" for most photos. HEIC is a very efficient format, and a full-resolution GIF of a detailed photo is usually several times bigger.
How to confirm the file is a GIF
- On macOS or Linux, run
file IMG_2207.gifin a terminal. It should report "GIF image data". - In any hex viewer, a GIF starts with the text
GIF89aorGIF87a. - The Copy button tries to put the image on the clipboard as a GIF. Many browsers only allow PNG images on the clipboard, so copying may be refused; Download always works.
When conversion fails
If you see "Conversion failed. Try a different format or another file.", the preview loaded but the conversion pass did not finish: the tool decodes the photo a second time and encodes it as GIF, and either step can stop. Very large photos on phones or older laptops can run short of memory here. Close other tabs and try again, or convert on a desktop.
