Credit Card Validator by Algorithm

Credit Card Validator by Algorithm checks whether a card number has a valid Luhn checksum and whether its prefix and length match the selected or detected issuer. It is a format checker for forms, QA and documentation, not a way to look up an account.

Type or paste a number and the page formats it as you go. Once enough digits are present, it sends the number to the server for a checksum and issuer check, then shows a visual card with a valid or invalid result.

The tool does not ask for a CVV or expiry, does not contact a bank, and cannot tell you whether a card is active, funded or stolen.

What the validator checks

The page takes a single card number and an optional expected issuer. It strips spaces and punctuation, checks the length, runs the Luhn algorithm, and compares the leading digits with known issuer patterns. The result includes the detected network, the number length, whether the Luhn check passed and whether the issuer matched.

If the expected issuer is set to Auto-Detect, the validator does not require a match; it reports whatever network the prefix suggests. If you choose a specific issuer, a number from another network is flagged as a mismatch even when the checksum is valid.

The result is displayed in a card mockup with a VALID or INVALID badge. A short message explains whether the failure was a checksum problem, a length problem or an issuer mismatch.

How to validate a number

  1. Choose an expected issuer, or leave it on Auto-Detect.
  2. Type or paste the card number into the input.
  3. Watch the number format into groups as you type. American Express uses a 4-6-5 grouping; most other networks use groups of four.
  4. Wait for the debounced check to finish once the number is long enough.
  5. Read the badge and the message, then check the network and length fields.
  6. Clear the field to test another number.

The input is designed for numbers, not for a full card record. It does not have expiry or CVV fields, because those are separate checks and this tool does not perform them.

How Luhn works in plain language

The Luhn algorithm doubles every second digit from the right, subtracts 9 from any result above 9, adds all the digits, and checks whether the total is divisible by 10. It is a compact way to catch a single wrong digit and many adjacent transpositions.

A valid checksum is not proof of validity. Someone can invent a number that passes Luhn, and a real card number can fail if a digit is mistyped. The checksum says “this sequence is internally consistent”, not “this account exists”.

Issuer detection is also pattern-based. The leading digits suggest a network, and the length must fall within that network's range. A number can pass both checks and still be unused, closed or nonexistent.

Reading the result

A green VALID badge means the number passed the checksum and, when a specific issuer was selected, matched that issuer's prefix and length. It does not mean the card can be charged. A red INVALID badge means at least one check failed; read the message to see which one.

“Network Mismatch” means the number looks like a different issuer from the one you selected. “Invalid Card Number” usually means the length is outside the supported range or the Luhn check failed. An unknown prefix can still produce a valid Luhn result with no recognized network; treat that as inconclusive rather than a real card.

The visual card is a presentation aid. The logo and colours are based on the detected or selected network, not on a live BIN lookup.

Good uses and bad uses

Use the validator to test a checkout form's formatting, to confirm that a test fixture is Luhn-valid, or to demonstrate why a mistyped digit is rejected. It is also useful in documentation when you need to explain the difference between a checksum and an authorization.

Do not use it to check whether a card stolen from a breach is still active. Do not use it to “validate” a card before a transaction outside a processor's system. Do not send a real card number to a page you do not control. The tool is not a payment gateway and has no security certification for handling live card data.

For any real payment flow, use tokenization through a PCI-compliant processor. The merchant should not need to store or transmit the raw card number through a custom validator.

Privacy and limits

The number is sent to the server for the checksum and issuer check. The page does not store it in an account or a history, but it still leaves your browser. Do not enter a live card number unless you are authorized to test the system and understand how the data is handled.

The validator supports lengths from 12 to 19 digits. It does not verify the expiry date, the CVV, the cardholder name, the billing address or the issuer's current BIN table. It also does not detect every network or every regional product.

If a result looks wrong, check for a missing digit, a letter that was stripped by the formatter, or a number that belongs to a network not in the detection list. When in doubt, use the official test cards from your payment processor.

A worked Luhn example

Take the sequence 79927398713. Starting from the right, double every second digit: 1 stays 1, 7 doubles to 14, 8 stays 8, 9 doubles to 18, 3 stays 3, 7 doubles to 14, 2 stays 2, 9 doubles to 18, 9 stays 9, 7 doubles to 14, and the leading 7 stays 7. Subtract 9 from each doubled value above 9, then add all the digits. The total is divisible by 10, so the sequence passes Luhn.

Now change one digit. The sum is no longer divisible by 10, so the check fails. That is the kind of error the algorithm catches. It does not catch a number that was invented with a correct checksum, and it does not prove that the account is open.

A validator is therefore a first filter. A real payment flow adds encryption, tokenization, expiry and CVV checks, address verification, 3-D Secure and the issuer's authorization. None of those steps happen here.

If the result is invalid, do not keep editing digits until the badge turns green. A valid checksum on an invented number is still not a usable card. Use a documented sandbox card when you need a known success response, and use a deliberately broken fixture when you need a failure case.

If the result is valid but the network is unknown, treat it as inconclusive. The prefix may belong to a product the tool does not list, or the number may be synthetic.

Keep each fixture labelled with the expected result so a future test run is easy to interpret.

Frequently Asked Questions

پرسش‌های متداول

پاسخ‌های کوتاه به پرسش‌هایی که کاربران پیش از اعتماد به نتیجه مطرح می‌کنند.

No. The validator checks the Luhn checksum and issuer-style prefix. It cannot confirm that an account exists, is active or has funds.

A checksum that catches single-digit errors and many transpositions. It is a format check, not an authorization.

No. The tool only accepts a card number. It does not have CVV or expiry fields and does not contact a bank.

Auto-Detect accepts whatever network the prefix suggests. Choose a specific issuer if you want to test a network mismatch.

Do not enter a live card number unless you are authorized to test the system. The number is sent to the server for validation.

The validator accepts 12 to 19 digits. Numbers outside that range are rejected before the checksum check.
