Free Php formatter Online

Free PHP Formatter cleans up PHP code by running it through a server-side formatter. Paste a snippet, load a public file from a URL, or switch to manual input, then choose Beautify or Minify and process the code.

PHP is preselected, but the same page can format HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, XML, JSON, YAML, INI, CSV, TOML and .env files. The language selector changes the editor mode and the download extension; the PHP beautifier uses the project's Pint installation.

Formatting happens on the server, so the code is uploaded for processing. The result is returned to the editor and can be copied or downloaded.

What the formatter does

The tool has two modes: Beautify and Minify. Beautify adds indentation and line breaks to make code readable. Minify removes unnecessary whitespace to make the output smaller. The mode and language are selected before processing.

The input can come from a URL or from the manual code editor. The URL tab fetches the file on the server, subject to a character limit, and places it in the editor. The manual tab is a Monaco editor with syntax highlighting for the selected language.

The output appears in a read-only editor with Copy and Download buttons. A status message reports success or a processing error. The download filename reflects the mode and language, such as beautify-output.php or minify-output.css.

Supported languages

The selector lists HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, XML, JSON, PHP, YAML, INI, CSV, TOML and .env. PHP is the default for this page. The formatter is useful when you need a quick cleanup without opening an IDE, but it is not a full project refactorer.

Some languages have different formatting rules. JSON and YAML are sensitive to structure, SQL has dialect differences, and .env files are line-oriented. Always inspect the output for semantic changes, especially when minifying.

The language selector also controls the editor's syntax mode. CSV, TOML and .env are treated as plain text in the editor, so syntax coloring may be limited.

How to format PHP

  1. Choose Beautify or Minify.
  2. Leave the language set to PHP, or change it if you are formatting another file.
  3. Use the URL tab to load a public file, or the Manual Code tab to paste code.
  4. Click Process Code.
  5. Wait for the server to return the result.
  6. Review the output for syntax changes, especially in strings and comments.
  7. Copy the result or download it with the suggested filename.

The PHP beautifier writes a temporary .php file, runs Pint, reads the formatted file back, and removes the temporary file. If Pint is unavailable or the code has a syntax error, the process fails with a generic message rather than returning a partial result.

Limits and failure cases

The server accepts up to 200,000 characters of code. A larger file is rejected by validation. The URL loader also has a character cap, so a very large remote file may be truncated or refused.

A PHP syntax error can prevent the formatter from producing output. Fix the parse error in an editor first, then try again. The formatter is not a debugger and will not explain the syntax error in detail.

Minification can change behaviour if the code relies on whitespace or newlines inside strings. Review the minified output in a test environment before deploying it. Keep a copy of the original file.

Privacy and safe use

Code pasted into the manual editor is sent to the server for processing. Do not submit proprietary source, credentials, API keys or customer data unless you are allowed to share it with the service. Remove secrets before formatting.

The server writes a temporary file for PHP formatting and deletes it after reading the result. The page does not create an account or a saved history, but the request still travels over the network. Use the tool for snippets and public code, not for sensitive production files.

A URL fetch is also server-side. Do not point it at an internal host, a private repository or a URL that requires your session. The fetcher has its own limits and may not return the same content a browser would see.

When to use it

  • Quick cleanup: format a snippet before sharing it in a ticket or a chat.
  • Readability: beautify minified vendor code to understand its structure.
  • Consistency: apply a standard style to a small file without opening an IDE.
  • Teaching: show the difference between readable and minified code.
  • Pre-commit check: format a single file before a review.
  • Converter companion: clean up code generated by another tool.

For a real project, use the formatter configured in the repository so the output matches the team's style. A one-off online formatter can differ from the project's Pint rules or line-length settings.

Beautify versus minify in practice

Beautify is for humans. It adds indentation, spaces around operators and line breaks between statements so the structure is easier to scan. Minify is for delivery. It removes comments, extra spaces and line breaks to reduce the payload. The two outputs serve different purposes, and a minified file is a poor place to debug.

Keep the beautified source in version control and generate the minified file as a build artifact. Do not edit the minified output by hand; the next build will overwrite it. If you are using the tool for a one-off cleanup, download the beautified version and review the diff before replacing the original.

Minification can change behaviour if a string contains significant whitespace or a comment-like sequence. Test the output in a staging environment. For PHP, a syntax error introduced by a minifier can take the whole page down, so keep a backup.

Working with PHP frameworks

A framework file may contain attributes, typed properties, match expressions and other modern syntax. The formatter uses the project's Pint rules, which understand current PHP syntax. A parse error usually comes from the input, not from the formatting rules. Check the file with php -l before submitting it.

Formatting a single controller or model is safe, but the result may differ from the repository's own Pint configuration if the online tool uses a different rule set. For a team project, run Pint locally with the repository's config so the formatting matches the rest of the codebase.

Do not paste a file that contains database credentials, API keys or customer data. Remove secrets first. Formatting does not need the real values, and the code is sent to the server.

A quick review checklist

  • Syntax: does the output still parse?
  • Strings: are quotes and escaped characters intact?
  • Comments: did minification remove a comment that was actually a directive?
  • Line length: is the beautified output readable in your editor?
  • Encoding: are non-ASCII characters still correct?
  • Secrets: did you remove credentials before uploading?

If the output looks unchanged, check that you selected the right mode and language. A minify pass on already-minified code may produce only a small difference.

If a file is too large, split it into logical sections and format each one separately rather than removing code to fit the limit.
