Real-time Currency Rate Converter By Date

This currency converter looks up an exchange rate for a chosen date and converts an amount between two currencies. It supports a latest-rate mode and a historical mode, plus a searchable table of rates for a base currency.

The rates come from an external currency API, with a fallback provider when the primary source is unavailable. The page caches recent requests for a short time and historical requests for longer, so repeated lookups are faster.

The result is an indicative conversion, not a bank quote. It does not include transfer fees, card spreads, taxes or the rate a particular provider will offer. Use it for planning and comparison, then confirm the actual rate at checkout.

Latest and historical modes

Latest mode asks the provider for the most recent rate. Historical mode lets you choose a date, up to today, and asks for that day's rate. The date field is disabled in latest mode because it would not change the request.

The page shows the requested date, the resolved date returned by the provider, and a latest or historical label. A provider may resolve a weekend or holiday request to a nearby publishing date. The label is based on the response, not on your assumption about the calendar.

If a historical request cannot be resolved, the service may fall back to the latest available rate. Read the warning and the resolved date before using the number in a report.

The conversion formula

The converted amount is the entered amount multiplied by the provider's rate for the base-to-target pair. The page also shows the unit rate, such as one base unit equals a certain number of target units.

The base currency is the one you are converting from. The target currency is the one you are converting to. Swapping them should produce a reciprocal rate, but rounding and provider data can create a small difference.

The table mode uses the same base and date to list many target currencies. Use the search box to filter by currency code or name. The row count tells you how many rates the provider returned for that base.

Where the rates come from

The primary source is the currency-api dataset, requested with a latest or dated path. A fallback provider, Frankfurter, is used when the primary request fails. The page caches latest data for about two minutes, historical data for a day, and the currency list for a day or more.

Provider coverage differs. Some currencies are present in one source and missing in another. A rate can be unavailable even though the currency appears in the list. The page may show a fallback warning when the secondary source supplies the result.

The service does not add a spread or commission. It returns the provider's rate as-is. That makes it useful for a mid-market estimate, but it is not the rate a bank, card network or money-transfer service will necessarily charge.

How to convert an amount

Enter the amount, choose the base and target currencies, and select latest or historical mode. For historical mode, pick a date and confirm that it is not in the future.

Press the convert action and read the converted amount, the unit rate, the requested date, the resolved date and the mode label. If a fallback warning appears, check whether the source and date are still acceptable for your purpose.

Swap the currencies to check the inverse direction. A small difference is normal because rates are rounded and the two directions may use different provider values. Do not treat the difference as a risk-free arbitrage.

Using the rate table

The table view lists currency codes, names and rates for the selected base and date. The search box filters the list after a short delay. It is useful when you need to compare several destinations or find the exact code for a currency.

The table does not calculate a converted amount for every row. It shows the rate so you can multiply by your own amount. If you need a precise result, use the converter with the specific target currency.

Historical tables depend on the provider's archive. A date that is too old or a currency that was not tracked may be missing. Check the resolved date before copying a row into a spreadsheet.

Limits and practical cautions

The converter does not validate every input on the server. An invalid pair or a zero rate can produce an error or a failed request. Use the provided currency dropdowns rather than typing arbitrary codes.

A latest request can be labelled historical if the provider returns a dated rate rather than the literal latest path. Read the resolved date and the warning instead of relying only on the chip.

The page does not include fees, taxes, card surcharges or transfer costs. For a real transaction, compare the provider's total cost, not only the headline exchange rate. Keep a record of the rate and date you used for accounting.

Reading a historical rate correctly

A historical rate is a snapshot of a published daily rate, not the rate that applied to every transaction on that date. Banks and payment providers often use their own cut-off time, spread and settlement rate. Two services can show different numbers for the same currency pair and date.

Weekends and holidays are a common source of confusion. If the provider does not publish on a non-business day, the page may resolve to the previous business day or fall back to the latest rate. Check the resolved date before using the figure in an invoice, report or tax calculation.

For accounting, record the source, the requested date, the resolved date and the rate you used. A later request can return a revised or different provider value. The page is a lookup aid, not a permanent audit trail.

Choosing between latest and historical

Use latest mode for a quick estimate of what a currency is worth now. Use historical mode when you need to match a past invoice, expense report or accounting date. Do not use a latest rate to fill in a historical transaction unless the difference is immaterial and you disclose the assumption.

If you are comparing providers, collect the rate and the total fee at the same moment. A provider with a better headline rate can still be more expensive after its spread and fixed charges. The calculator gives you a neutral reference point for that comparison.

Keeping a useful record

Write down the amount, the base and target codes, the requested date and the resolved date. If a provider later revises the data, your note explains which snapshot you used. That is more reliable than returning weeks later and assuming the number will be identical.

What refreshes automatically and what needs Convert Now

The converter re-runs on its own when you change the base currency, the target currency, the date or the rate type. Changing only the amount does not trigger a new request, so press Convert Now after typing a new amount. While a request is running the button reads "Converting..." and is disabled, which prevents duplicate requests.

The converted amount is shown with up to four decimal places and the unit rate with up to six, so small currencies and large amounts both stay readable. The page starts with an amount of 1 and US Dollar to Euro, which means the first result you see is simply the unit rate.

Searching the currency menus and the table base

The base and target menus are searchable: click one and type a code such as jpy or part of a name instead of scrolling the full list. The Exchange Rate Table has its own Select Your Base Currency menu, separate from the converter's. You can convert USD to EUR at the top while the table below lists every rate against GBP or any other base. The table does share the converter's rate type and date, so switching to a historical date changes both at once. Its footer shows the base, the resolved date and the number of rows, and the search box filters by code or currency name.

The page requests the latest available rate and caches it briefly. It is not a streaming market feed, and the provider may return a recent dated rate rather than a real-time tick.

Yes. Swap the dropdowns and convert again. Small differences between the two directions are normal because rates are rounded.

No. The calculation and table are generated for the current request and are not stored by the page.

Amount changes do not trigger a new conversion on their own. Press Convert Now. Changing the currencies, the date or the rate type does update the result automatically.

Yes. The table has its own base currency menu. It does follow the converter's rate type and date, so both use the same day's data.
