Start a Markdown table without counting pipes
The fiddly part of a Markdown table is not the data, it is the scaffolding: one pipe per column boundary, a separator row with the right number of dash groups, and alignment colons in the right places. The Markdown Table Generator writes that scaffolding for you. Choose how many rows and columns you need, decide whether you want a header row and centred columns, set the text that fills the cells, and press Generate. You get valid pipe-table Markdown in the output panel and a rendered preview beside it.
It is a skeleton builder. You fill in the real values afterwards in your own editor, which is usually much faster than typing every pipe and dash by hand.
The four settings
Rows
A number from 1 to 50, default 3. When Header row is ticked, the header counts as one of these rows. So 3 rows with a header gives you the header line, the separator line and two body rows. Values outside the range are pulled back to the nearest limit when you generate, and an empty or invalid entry falls back to 3.
Columns
A number from 1 to 20, default 3. Each column in the header is named Column 1, Column 2 and so on, ready for you to rename. As with rows, values beyond the limits are clamped and invalid input falls back to 3.
Cell placeholder
The text written into every body cell, default value. Use something you can find and replace easily, such as TODO, a dash, or n/a. If you leave it empty, the generator uses value.
Header row and Center align
Header row (on by default) adds the Column N header line. Center align (off by default) writes every separator cell as :---: instead of ---, so all columns render centred.
What the output looks like
With the defaults, 3 rows by 3 columns with a header, the generator produces:
| Column 1 | Column 2 | Column 3 || --- | --- | --- || value | value | value || value | value | value |
The rows are compact, with a single space each side of every pipe, rather than padded into aligned columns. That is perfectly valid Markdown and renders the same way. If you want the source to line up neatly after you fill in your data, run the finished table through the Markdown Table Formatter.
What happens with Header row turned off
Markdown pipe tables always need a header line followed by a separator. When you untick Header row, the generator still writes that structure, but the first line contains your placeholder text instead of column names. It then adds the number of body rows you asked for underneath. In other words, with the header off, a 3-row table comes out as one placeholder line, a separator, and three more placeholder lines, four lines of cells in total. In most renderers the first line will still appear bold as a header. The preview reflects this too, showing all placeholder rows as plain cells. If you need a truly headerless look, keep the header on and rename the cells to whatever suits you.
Generating a table step by step
- Enter the number of Rows and Columns in the Table Settings card. The summary under the card updates to show the size, for example 4 × 5 table, and whether the header and centring are on.
- Type a Cell placeholder, or keep
value. - Tick or untick Header row and Center align.
- Press Generate. The Markdown appears in Output Markdown and the Preview badge changes from Waiting to Preview ready.
- Press Copy Table, or Download to save the result as
markdown-table.md. - Paste it into your README, wiki, issue or notes app and replace the column names and placeholders with real content.
Clear puts every setting back to its default (3 by 3, header on, centring off, placeholder value), empties the output and resets the preview. The output editor itself is read-only; do your editing after you paste the table where it belongs.
Where it saves time
- Comparison tables in product docs or blog posts, where you know the number of options and criteria in advance.
- Checklists and status boards in GitHub issues or project wikis, using a placeholder such as
pending. - Meeting notes and agendas where every row needs the same columns: topic, owner, decision.
- Teaching Markdown, because the preview shows exactly how the syntax renders.
- Wide tables of 10 or more columns, where miscounting pipes by hand is easy and a broken separator stops the whole table from rendering.
Tips
- Pick a placeholder you can search for. A distinctive word lets you jump from cell to cell with find in your editor and spot any you missed.
- Count the header in your rows. If you need ten data rows plus a header, enter 11.
- Use centring sparingly. Centred text is harder to scan in long columns. Numbers usually read best right aligned, which you can set by changing a separator cell to
---:after pasting. - Keep the header on for the most compatible output; the tip on the page recommends the same.
What not to do
- Do not put a pipe character in the placeholder. It is inserted as-is, so
a|bwould create extra cells in every row and break the column count. - Do not expect the generator to import data. It does not read CSV, spreadsheets or existing tables; it only creates an empty structure.
- Do not rely on it for per-column alignment. Center align applies to every column at once; mixed alignment has to be edited by hand.
Limitations
- Maximum 50 rows and 20 columns per table.
- Every body cell gets the same placeholder text.
- Header names are always
Column 1toColumn N. - Only two alignment choices: default for all columns or centred for all columns.
- Output is not padded into aligned columns.
Privacy
The generator runs entirely in your browser. The settings you enter, the generated Markdown and the downloaded file never leave your device; there is no request to the server when you press Generate, Copy Table or Download.
