Word Finder and Replacer

Word Finder and Replacer searches a block of text for a word or pattern and replaces every match with something else. It is useful for fixing a repeated typo, updating a name across a draft, changing a URL fragment or cleaning up a list.

The page works entirely in your browser. Paste the text, enter what to find and what to replace it with, then run the replacement. Optional switches let you match case, match whole words only, or use a regular expression for more complex patterns.

Because there is no server round trip, the text stays on your device. The trade-off is that there is no saved history and no undo beyond the reset button, so keep a copy of anything important.

What the tool does

The interface is a two-column workspace. The left side holds the input text and the find/replace fields. The right side shows the result. A statistics bar counts characters, words and matches, and the result bar reports how many replacements were made.

Four buttons cover the common actions: Paste, Clear, Copy and Use as Input. “Use as Input” is the important one for repeated passes: it moves the result back into the input box so you can run another search without copying and pasting manually. Reset All restores the form to its initial state.

The replacement runs when you click Find & Replace All or press Enter in the find field. Every non-overlapping match is replaced in one pass. The result is read-only, which prevents an accidental edit before you copy it.

The options explained

  • Case Sensitive: when off, “Name” and “name” match the same pattern. When on, only the exact case matches.
  • Whole Word Only: wraps the pattern in word boundaries so “cat” does not match “category”. This works best for ordinary words, not for punctuation-heavy patterns.
  • Use Regex: treats the find field as a JavaScript regular expression. This unlocks patterns such as digit runs, optional spaces and capture groups.

If the regex is invalid, the page reports an invalid pattern instead of running a partial replacement. That is safer than silently changing half the text.

How to find and replace

  1. Paste or type your source text into the input box.
  2. Enter the word or pattern in Find Text.
  3. Enter the replacement in Replace With. Leave it empty to delete the matches.
  4. Choose case, whole-word or regex options if needed.
  5. Check the live match count before running the replacement.
  6. Click Find & Replace All.
  7. Review the result, then click Copy or Use as Input.

The live count updates as you type, so you can confirm that the pattern matches what you expect. If the count is zero, the result box stays empty. If the count is much larger than expected, stop and refine the pattern before replacing.

Regex examples that help

A regex is a pattern language, not a wildcard. A few simple patterns cover many editing jobs:

  • \b\d{4}\b matches a standalone four-digit number, such as a year.
  • \s+ matches one or more spaces, tabs or line breaks.
  • https?://\S+ matches a URL up to the next whitespace.
  • (\w+)@(\w+\.\w+) captures the parts of a simple email address.
  • ^\s*$ matches a blank line in a multiline pattern.

In the replacement field, JavaScript replacement patterns such as $1 refer to a capture group, and $& refers to the whole match. If you want a literal dollar sign, escape it according to the pattern you are using. Test on a small sample before running a broad replacement.

Safety and common mistakes

Replacement is global and immediate. There is no per-match confirmation and no undo history beyond resetting the form. If the source text is important, paste a copy into the tool rather than editing the only version.

Watch out for partial matches. Replacing “art” without whole-word matching will also change “start”, “party” and “article”. Watch out for case: replacing “John” with case sensitivity off will also change “john” and “JOHN”. Watch out for regex metacharacters: a literal dot matches any character unless you escape it.

Whole-word mode uses word boundaries, which can behave oddly when the pattern begins or ends with punctuation. If a whole-word search returns nothing for a phrase with a slash or bracket, turn it off and use a more specific regex instead.

Be careful with a regex that can backtrack heavily on long text. A pattern with nested quantifiers can freeze the page. Start with a small sample and a simple expression, then broaden it only when the result is correct.

Limits and privacy

The tool works on text, not on files. It does not read a PDF, a Word document or an Excel workbook directly; extract the text first and paste it in. It also does not preserve rich formatting, because the output is plain text.

Character counts use JavaScript string length, so an emoji or some non-Latin characters may count as more than one unit. Match counts are based on non-overlapping matches. That is normally what you want, but it can differ from a visual count when matches overlap.

Nothing is uploaded. The input and result stay in the page, and closing the tab discards them. Copying the result places it on your clipboard, where other apps may be able to read it. Clear the clipboard after pasting if the text is sensitive.

A safe batch-cleanup workflow

Start with a copy of the source text, not the only copy. Run the narrowest search first: a single word with case sensitivity on and whole-word matching enabled. Check the match count, replace, and inspect the result. Then broaden the rule in small steps. This catches an accidental partial match before it spreads through the document.

For a list of names, replace one name at a time rather than trying to match every name with one clever regex. For a URL change, search for the exact old domain and replace it with the new one, then check for links that used a different protocol or a trailing slash. For whitespace cleanup, replace repeated spaces first, then blank lines, then leading or trailing spaces on each line if your pattern supports multiline mode.

Keep a short note of the patterns you used. If a later edit introduces a new case, you can repeat the same pass instead of reconstructing the regex from memory. If the text is part of a code file, run the replacement on a branch or a copy and review the diff before committing.

Replacement patterns and escaping

When Use Regex is on, the replacement string is not always literal. JavaScript interprets $1, $2 and similar tokens as capture groups, and

Frequently Asked Questions

amp; as the whole match. That is powerful for reformatting dates or swapping name order, but it can produce surprising output if your replacement text contains a dollar sign by accident.

A literal backslash also needs care. In a regex, \d means a digit, while \\d may mean a literal backslash followed by a d. The exact escaping depends on whether the pattern is typed directly into the field or pasted from code. Test with a tiny sample before applying it to a long document.

If you only need a literal find and replace, leave Use Regex off. The page escapes the search text for you, so punctuation such as dots, brackets and question marks is treated as text rather than as pattern syntax.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan

Jawaban singkat atas pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang diajukan pengguna sebelum mempercayai hasilnya.

Yes. Find & Replace All replaces every non-overlapping match in one pass. Review the live match count first, because there is no per-match confirmation.

It adds word boundaries so a search for “cat” does not match “category”. It works best for ordinary words and can behave oddly around punctuation.

Yes. Enable Use Regex and enter a JavaScript regular expression in the find field. Invalid patterns are reported instead of being applied.

There is no multi-step undo. Use Reset All to restore the form, or keep a copy of the original text before replacing.

It works on plain text. Extract the text from the file first, then paste it into the input box. Formatting is not preserved.

No. The search and replacement run in your browser. The page does not store the input or the result.
