JPG to PNG Image Converter

This page converts JPG and JPEG images into PNG. The server decodes the source, writes the pixels into a PNG file, and returns a download link. You can also resize the image, set a DPI value and process several files in one queue.

PNG is a lossless container, but that does not restore detail that the original JPG already lost. The conversion preserves the decoded pixels rather than the camera's original data. Expect the PNG to be larger than the JPG, especially for photographs.

Use this converter when a site, editor or workflow requires a PNG file. If you only need a smaller photo, converting to PNG is usually the wrong direction; keep the JPG or use WebP instead.

What JPG to PNG conversion actually does

The server reads the JPG, decodes it into a pixel buffer, and saves that buffer as PNG. PNG stores the image without the lossy block compression used by JPEG, so the decoded pixels are preserved exactly in the new file. The visible result should look like the JPG you started with.

The important limit is that the original JPG compression is already baked in. If the source has blocky shadows, colour halos or soft text, those problems remain in the PNG. Converting the container cannot bring back detail that was discarded when the JPG was created.

PNG files are often several times larger than the source JPG, particularly for camera photos. The tool reports the output size and the percentage change so you can see the cost before you download.

Why choose PNG

PNG is a good fit for screenshots, diagrams, logos, line art and images that will be edited repeatedly. Its lossless storage avoids adding a new layer of JPEG artifacts every time the file is opened and saved. It also supports transparency, although a JPG source has no alpha channel to preserve.

A PNG is not automatically better for the web. Large photographic PNGs can slow a page down and may be rejected by upload forms with a tight file-size limit. Use PNG when the destination asks for it or when sharp edges matter more than download size.

If the source is a JPG with no transparency, the PNG output will be opaque. Converting it does not create a cut-out or a transparent background. You need an editor and a mask for that.

Quality, compression and the slider

The quality control defaults to 75. For PNG, the server maps that value to the PNG compression level rather than to lossy visual quality. The image remains lossless; the setting changes how much effort the encoder spends packing the data.

A high quality value generally means lighter compression and a larger file. A lower value asks for stronger compression, which can take longer but should not remove pixels. The difference in size is often modest on complex photos and more noticeable on flat graphics.

Do not expect the slider to turn a photographic PNG into a small web image. If the file must be much smaller, resize the pixel dimensions, switch to JPG or WebP, or use a dedicated compression workflow.

Resize and DPI controls

Choose a resize unit to reveal the width and height fields. Pixels are best when a form specifies exact dimensions. Percent is convenient for a quick reduction. Inches, centimetres and millimetres help when a print size is given in physical units.

The DPI field writes a dots-per-inch value into the output metadata. It is useful for print preparation, but it does not change the number of pixels. A 600 by 600 pixel image stays 600 by 600 pixels whether the DPI field says 72 or 300.

If you resize a JPG before converting, do it in one pass here rather than repeatedly opening and saving the file. Each JPEG save can add artifacts, while the PNG output itself is lossless.

Batch conversion and URL input

You can add several JPG files at once. Each file gets a queue card, and Process All sends the pending items together. This is useful for preparing a set of images for a design tool or a site that only accepts PNG uploads.

The From URL option accepts one image address per line. The server fetches the remote file, converts it, and returns the PNG. The fetch can fail if the host blocks external requests, requires a login, or returns an HTML page instead of an image.

Files are limited to 10 MB each. A large batch can still take time because every image must be decoded and re-encoded. Split very long lists into smaller groups and check the first result before processing the rest.

How to convert a JPG to PNG

Open the tool and leave Convert Format on PNG. The page preselects PNG for this workflow. Set a quality value if you have a reason to change it, otherwise keep the default. Add a resize or DPI value only when the destination requires one.

Drag the JPG into the upload area, browse for it, or paste its URL. Confirm that the queue card shows the correct file and dimensions. Press Process on that card for a single file, or add more files and use Process All.

When the output card appears, check the size, dimensions and PNG badge. Download the file and open it in the destination application. If the PNG is too large, return to the settings, reduce the dimensions or choose a different format.

Known quirks and limitations

The file picker on this page is configured to suggest PNG files even though the tool converts JPG input. If your JPG is greyed out in the browse dialog, drag it onto the upload area or use the URL option instead. The processing endpoint accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, JIFF and BMP.

PNG does not carry the same camera metadata as a JPG. Do not rely on EXIF fields such as capture time, lens or GPS surviving the conversion. If those fields matter, keep the original JPG as the archive copy.

The converter does not crop, rotate, straighten or remove backgrounds. It also does not check whether the image meets a particular portal's rules. Those checks belong to the destination service, not to a format conversion.

When PNG is the wrong choice

For a large photo that only needs to look good on a screen, JPG or WebP is usually the more practical format. A PNG can be many times larger for no visible benefit. For a quick email attachment, keep the JPG and reduce its dimensions instead.

For a transparent logo, start from a PNG or another source that actually has an alpha channel. Converting an opaque JPG cannot create transparency. For a print-ready file, check the printer's required colour space and resolution; this tool handles dimensions and DPI metadata, not colour conversion.

Keep the original JPG until you have confirmed that the PNG opens correctly in the target application. A format change can expose compatibility issues that were not visible in the browser preview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Domande frequenti

Risposte concise alle domande che gli utenti si pongono prima di fidarsi del risultato.

No. PNG preserves the pixels that remain after JPEG decoding, but it cannot restore detail that the JPG already discarded. The image may look the same, not better.

Usually not. PNG is often larger, especially for photographs. It can be smaller for simple graphics, but you should check the output size badge.

Yes. Add multiple files, keep one set of settings, and use Process All. For different sizes or quality settings, process separate groups.

A JPG has no transparency to keep, so the PNG output is opaque. To create a transparent PNG, start from an image with an alpha channel and use an editor with a mask.

The picker is set to suggest PNG files. Drag the JPG onto the upload area or use the From URL option; the server still accepts JPG input.

No. PNG remains lossless. The slider changes compression effort and file size, not the visible pixel detail.

Yes. Choose a resize unit, enter the dimensions, and fill in the DPI field before processing. DPI is metadata and does not change the pixel count.
