PDF to Image Converter
Render every page of a PDF as an image in your browser with PDF.js and download single pages or a ZIP of selected pages. Export PNG, JPG, JPEG, JFIF, JIFF or WEBP locally, or GIF and BMP with a server conversion step. Set quality and a 5 to 300 percent size scale. Your PDF is not uploaded.

What the PDF to Image Converter Does
This tool opens a PDF, draws every page as a picture, and lets you save those pictures as image files, either one page at a time or as a ZIP of the pages you select. It is the reverse of an image-to-PDF converter. People use it to post a page of a brochure on social media, drop a slide into a chat, insert a chart from a report into a presentation, make thumbnails for a document library, or submit a certificate to a site that accepts only images.
Unlike the image-to-PDF tools on this site, most of the work here happens on your own device. The page uses PDF.js (Mozilla's PDF renderer, version 2.16.105) to read and draw the PDF in your browser, JSZip to build the ZIP archive, and FileSaver to trigger downloads. Your PDF file itself is never uploaded. The only exception is GIF and BMP output, explained below.
Output Formats in the Convert To Menu
The Convert To menu lists eight entries. PNG is selected when the page opens. This is how each one is produced in the current code:
| Menu entry | File extension | How it is made | Image Quality Percent used? |
|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | .png | Browser canvas, lossless | No |
| JPG | .jpg | Browser canvas, JPEG encoding | Yes |
| JPEG | .jpeg | Browser canvas, JPEG encoding | Yes |
| JFIF | .jfif | Browser canvas, JPEG data with a .jfif name | Yes |
| JIFF | .jiff | Browser canvas, JPEG data with a .jiff name | Yes |
| WEBP | .webp | Browser canvas, WEBP encoding | Yes |
| GIF | .gif | Rendered as PNG in the browser, then converted on the server | No |
| BMP | .bmp | Rendered as PNG in the browser, then converted on the server | No |
All eight are raster formats. JPG, JPEG, JFIF and JIFF contain the same kind of JPEG data and differ only in the file extension. There is no vector export; if you need true SVG, this is not the right tool.
Privacy: What Stays Local and What Does Not
For PNG, JPG, JPEG, JFIF, JIFF and WEBP, everything runs in your browser. The PDF is read from your disk into memory, drawn onto canvases and encoded there, and downloads are generated locally. No request carrying your document or its pages leaves your device.
For GIF and BMP, browsers cannot encode those formats from a canvas. The page therefore renders each page as PNG locally and sends that page image, one request per page, to the site's image conversion endpoint. The server converts it with its image library, returns the file, and deletes its temporary copy in the same request. The PDF itself is still not uploaded, only the rendered page pictures. Each page image sent this way must be within the server's 12 MB per-image limit.
Choosing a Size: the Image Size Scale Setting
Image Size Scale (%) accepts 5 to 300 and starts at 100. PDF.js measures pages in points, and at 100% one point becomes one pixel, which is 72 pixels per inch of paper. For an A4 page that works out as follows:
| Scale | A4 page in pixels | Equivalent print resolution | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50% | 298 × 421 | 36 DPI | Thumbnails |
| 100% | 596 × 842 | 72 DPI | Screen previews, chat |
| 200% | 1191 × 1684 | 144 DPI | Readable text on screens, slides |
| 300% | 1786 × 2526 | 216 DPI | Sharpest output this tool allows, light printing |
Pages of other sizes scale the same way from their own dimensions. The hint on the page recommends 100%; for documents with small print, 200% or 300% is noticeably clearer at the cost of larger files and slower rendering.
Image Quality Percent (1 to 100, default 90) applies to JPG, JPEG, JFIF, JIFF and WEBP. Lower numbers give smaller files with more compression artefacts around text.
How to Use It
- Drop a PDF on Drop PDF file here or press Select PDF. The Selected File box shows its name and size.
- Pick an output in Convert To, then set Image Quality Percent and Image Size Scale (%).
- Press Render Pages. Every page of the PDF is drawn in turn; a progress bar and the status line ("Rendering page 3 of 12...") track it. Changing format or scale later means rendering again.
- Each page appears in Rendered Pages with its own Download button. Use that button to save a single page straight away; the file is named after your PDF, for example
report-page-3.png. - To save several pages, select them. Click page images to toggle them, tick Select all rendered pages, type a page in Single Page and press Add, enter Range Start and Range End and press Add Range, or type a list such as
1,3-5in Manual Pages and press Apply. Chosen pages show as chips under Selected Pages. - Press Download Selected ZIP. The archive is named like
report-selected-pages.zip. - Clear All resets the file, pages and selection.
Tips
- Use PNG for pages with text, tables or line art. It keeps edges crisp.
- Use JPG or WEBP for photo-heavy pages such as brochures, where they produce much smaller files.
- For a 100-page PDF, start at 100% scale. Every page is rendered and kept in memory, and very high scales on long documents can slow down or exhaust a phone browser.
- Pick GIF only when a destination demands it; it is limited to 256 colours and is processed through the server.
Things to Avoid
- Do not expect vector output. Every format in the menu is a raster image at the chosen scale.
- Do not use it on password-protected PDFs. There is no password field, so PDF.js cannot open them and rendering fails.
- Do not assume you can render only part of a document. All pages are rendered; the page selection controls only what goes into the ZIP.
- Do not pick 300% for every job. File sizes grow with the square of the scale.
Limitations
Maximum scale is 300%, roughly 216 DPI for a standard page, which is fine for screens but below typical 300 DPI print expectations. No cropping, no rotation, no background colour choice, no text extraction. Rendering accuracy depends on PDF.js; unusual fonts or complex transparency effects can occasionally differ slightly from desktop viewers. GIF and BMP need a working connection to the server. For extracting text instead of pictures, use the PDF to Text converter, and for single-format pages there are shortcuts such as PDF to PNG and PDF to JPG.
