JPG to BMP Image Converter

This tool converts JPG and JPEG images into BMP, the bitmap format used by many older Windows programs and embedded devices. The server decodes the JPG and writes a bitmap file, with optional resizing and a DPI metadata value.

BMP is normally uncompressed, so the output is usually much larger than the source JPG. That is expected. The format is useful for compatibility, not for saving space or speeding up a website.

A JPG has no transparency, so the BMP will be opaque. The converter does not crop, rotate or improve the photo; it changes the container and any dimensions you request.

What JPG to BMP conversion means

The server reads the JPG, expands it into a pixel grid, and stores that grid in a bitmap file. The decoded pixels are kept, but the original JPEG compression artifacts remain. Converting to BMP does not restore detail that the JPG already lost.

The main visible difference is file size. BMP usually stores colour data with little or no compression, so a photo that was 300 KB as a JPG can become several megabytes. The output badge shows the new size and the percentage change before you download.

BMP is a family of formats, not a single fixed layout. This tool produces a standard bitmap suitable for ordinary desktop use. Very old or specialised devices may still expect a particular bit depth or header variant; test the file in the target program.

When BMP is the right choice

Use BMP when an older Windows application, industrial controller, legacy report generator or embedded viewer refuses JPG or PNG. Some internal tools and point-of-sale systems still expect a bitmap because it is simple to decode.

Do not use BMP for a website, an email attachment or a mobile app bundle unless the destination explicitly requires it. The uncompressed size wastes bandwidth and storage, and modern browsers gain nothing from the format.

BMP can also be useful as an intermediate file for software that cannot read JPG but can import a bitmap. Convert a copy, import it, and keep the original JPG as your archive.

Why the quality slider has little effect

The quality control is shared with the other image tools, where it controls lossy compression for JPG and WebP or compression effort for PNG. BMP is generally stored without that kind of lossy stage, so moving the slider is not a reliable way to shrink the file.

If size matters, reduce the pixel dimensions instead. A smaller bitmap has fewer pixels and therefore fewer bytes. Changing the quality value alone will not turn a large BMP into a small one.

The output may still vary a little depending on the server's image library and the bitmap variant it writes, but you should not expect the same quality-versus-size trade-off you get from a JPEG encoder.

Resize units and DPI metadata

The resize menu offers pixels, percent, inches, centimetres and millimetres. Pixels are the clearest choice for software that expects exact dimensions. Physical units are useful when a print or label specification gives a size in inches or centimetres.

DPI writes a dots-per-inch value into the file metadata. It is mainly relevant to printing. It does not change the bitmap's pixel count, and it cannot make a low-resolution image look sharper.

Downscaling before saving a BMP is the most effective way to control size. Enlarging adds pixels and makes the file bigger without adding real detail. Start from the largest source you have and resize once.

Batch conversion and URL input

Add multiple JPG files to the queue, choose one set of settings, and use Process All. Each file is converted separately and gets its own download link. The tool does not merge the images into one bitmap.

The From URL option accepts one image address per line. The server fetches each remote file and converts it. A host that blocks hotlinks, requires a login or returns an error page can cause the fetch to fail.

Each source file is limited to 10 MB. Because BMP output is larger, a batch can produce a lot of data and take longer to download. Process a few files at a time if you are working on a slow connection.

How to convert a JPG to BMP

Leave Convert Format on BMP. Choose whether to resize. If the target program has no size requirement, keep the original dimensions. Add a DPI value only if the destination asks for one.

Add the JPG by dragging, browsing or pasting a URL. Confirm the queue card, then press Process. For several files, add them all and use Process All.

Review the output size before downloading. A very large BMP may exceed an email limit or a form's upload cap. If it does, return to the settings, reduce the dimensions, and process the file again from the original JPG.

Compatibility and limitations

The file picker is configured to suggest BMP files, which can make JPG files hard to select in some browsers. Drag the JPG onto the upload area or use the URL field instead. The server accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, JIFF and BMP sources.

BMP does not support the same transparency workflow as PNG. A JPG source is opaque, so the output is opaque. If you need transparency, start from a PNG and use a format that preserves alpha.

This converter does not crop, rotate, annotate or check whether the bitmap matches a device's required colour depth. It also does not guarantee that every legacy program will accept the generated header. Keep the original and test the output in the actual destination.

Working with legacy software

Before converting a whole folder, test one BMP in the actual program that will open it. Legacy software can be picky about bit depth, colour order, file extension or the maximum image size it can allocate. A file that opens in Windows Photos may still fail in an older label printer or machine-control application.

If the program expects a particular filename or folder, rename the downloaded file after conversion. This tool returns a generated bitmap name; it does not rename files to match a device's naming convention. Keep a copy of the original JPG so you can produce another variant without starting over.

For a device with limited memory, reduce the pixel dimensions before converting. A smaller bitmap is easier to load and transfer. Very large BMPs can also exceed email attachments or removable-media limits even when the source JPG was modest.

Bitmaps for print, labels and archives

A BMP can be acceptable for an internal label, a simple signage panel or a legacy print workflow, but it is not a print-ready colour-managed format by itself. Check the printer's required resolution, colour space and background. The DPI field only records a number; it does not convert colour or guarantee a particular physical size.

For long-term archiving, keep the original JPG, a PNG copy if lossless editing matters, and the BMP only if a specific system needs it. Bitmaps are bulky and can be slow to back up. A format that is easy to open today may be inconvenient when the collection grows.

If the bitmap is going into a document, place it at its intended size and inspect the result. Enlarging a low-resolution BMP in a layout program adds no detail. Start from a sufficiently large source and resize deliberately rather than relying on the document editor to fix it.

Frequently Asked Questions

자주 묻는 질문

사용자가 결과를 신뢰하기 전에 자주 묻는 질문에 대한 간결한 답변.

BMP is generally uncompressed, while JPG uses lossy compression. The bitmap stores far more data per pixel, so a photographic image can grow many times over.

Not reliably. BMP is normally stored without lossy quality stages. To make the file smaller, reduce the pixel dimensions instead.

Yes. Add multiple files, keep one set of settings, and use Process All. Each image is returned as a separate bitmap.

No. A JPG has no transparency to preserve, and the output is opaque. Start from a PNG if you need an alpha channel.

The picker is set to suggest BMP files. Drag the JPG onto the upload area or use the From URL option; the server still accepts JPG input.

Usually no. It is much larger than JPG, PNG or WebP and offers no web advantage. Use BMP only when a specific program requires it.

No. DPI is print metadata. It does not change the pixel width or height, and it does not add detail to the image.
