Image Color Palette Picker
Extract 3 to 16 dominant colors from a JPG, PNG or WebP image. Adjust the sampling step, copy HEX, RGB or HSL values, and export JSON or CSS.
The palette is a frequency-based approximation, not an eyedropper. Images are downscaled and colors are grouped into coarse bins.

Image Color Palette Picker
What the palette picker does
This page extracts a color palette from an image. You choose how many colors you want and how densely to sample the pixels, then the page counts the most frequent colors and shows them as swatches. Each swatch includes HEX, RGB and HSL values, and you can copy a value or export the palette as JSON or CSS. The analysis runs in your browser on a canvas. It is a quick way to pull a dominant-color palette from a photo, screenshot or design.
How extraction works
The image is drawn to a canvas and downscaled to a maximum of 900 pixels on the long side. The page samples pixels at the chosen step, quantizes each color channel into 16 levels, and counts the bins. Fully transparent pixels are skipped. The most frequent bins become the palette, and the weights are calculated relative to the selected colors. This is a frequency-based dominant-color palette, not a perceptual color-theory model.
Palette size
The slider runs from 3 to 16 colors, with 8 as the default. A small palette gives you a bold, simple scheme; a larger one captures more variation but can include near-duplicates. If two swatches look almost the same, reduce the palette size or increase the sampling step. The tool does not merge similar colors after selection, so the result can contain colors that are visually close but numerically distinct.
Sampling step
The sampling step runs from 1 to 12, with 4 as the default. A step of 1 samples more pixels and takes longer; a larger step skips pixels and runs faster. A large step can miss a small but important accent color. A small step on a busy photo may produce a palette dominated by background texture. Adjust the step and compare the result rather than assuming the first palette is the best one.
Transparency and quantization
Pixels with very low alpha are ignored, so a transparent PNG does not contribute invisible colors. The remaining colors are grouped into coarse bins, which means the reported HEX value is representative of a bin rather than an exact average of every pixel. That is useful for a dominant palette, but it is not a color-accurate sampler. If you need an exact pixel value, use an eyedropper in an image editor; this page does not provide one.
How to use it
Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP image with the picker or drop zone. Set the palette size and sampling step. Press Extract. The preview shows the image, and the swatches appear below it with color counts and weights. Use the copy control on a swatch to copy its value. Use Clear to reset the result. The page does not upload the image to a server; the canvas analysis happens locally.
Swatches and color formats
Each swatch shows a color sample, its HEX value, RGB values, HSL values and a relative weight. HEX is convenient for CSS and design tools. RGB is useful for code that expects separate channels. HSL makes it easier to reason about hue, saturation and lightness. The weight tells you how much of the selected palette the color represents, not how much of the whole image it covers.
Exporting JSON and CSS
The export controls create a palette.json file and a palette.css file. The JSON is useful for a design token pipeline or a script. The CSS file gives you variables or classes you can paste into a stylesheet. Check the generated names and values before committing them. The page does not create a full theme, choose accessible text colors or test contrast for you.
Design use cases
Use the palette as a starting point for a mood board, a slide theme, a simple illustration or a brand exploration. It is also useful for checking which colors dominate a screenshot or a product photo. Do not treat the output as a brand guideline. A brand palette is chosen for meaning, contrast and consistency, not only for frequency in one image. Test the colors with real text and backgrounds.
Limits and accuracy
The image is downscaled, so tiny details and single-pixel accents may disappear. The 16-level quantization is coarse, and the weights are relative to the selected palette rather than the entire image. There is no eyedropper, no manual color picker, no contrast checker and no accessible-pair suggestion. The page does not state a file-size limit, but very large images can still be slow to decode in the browser.
Privacy and local processing
The image is read in the browser and is not sent to Newisty. That makes the page convenient for internal screenshots, but the image still sits in the page until you clear it or close the tab. The exported JSON and CSS contain only color values and names, not the image. On a shared device, clear the result when you finish.
Common problems
If the palette looks dull, the image may be dominated by a background or the sampling step may be too large. If two colors are nearly identical, reduce the palette size. If the image does not load, try a JPG or PNG instead of an unusual WebP variant. If the page is slow, use a smaller image. If a copied value is rejected by a tool, paste the HEX without extra spaces.
What not to do
Do not use the palette as proof of brand colors. Do not assume the most frequent color is the most important one. Do not rely on the tool for exact pixel sampling. Do not skip a contrast check. Do not paste a confidential screenshot on a shared device. Do not expect the export to create a complete, accessible theme.
Accessible color use
A dominant palette is not automatically accessible. Two colors can look distinct to you but have poor contrast for text. Check foreground and background pairs with a contrast tool before using them in an interface. Do not use color alone to carry meaning. If the palette is for a brand, test it in real layouts and with people who have different color vision. The extractor does not score contrast or suggest accessible pairs.
