What Common University Entrance Test is
CUET is the common entrance test run by the National Testing Agency for undergraduate admission to central universities and other participating institutions. It replaced a set of separate university-level entrance tests with a single national paper, so a candidate registers once and applies to many universities with one score.
That design is what makes the photograph and signature worth sorting out carefully. The same uploaded files travel to every university application made in that cycle, and each participating university can attach its own document requirements to the same registration. A file that one university accepts can be refused by another that wanted a different crop or a smaller file weight, so producing a clean, conventional, correctly sized pair once is what keeps a multi-university application intact.
This page sets out the numbers CUET actually asks for. It is not a general guide to cropping or to the tool interface, because those instructions do not change from one exam to the next and they are written up separately.
What the CUET form asks you to upload
There are two files to prepare:
- A photograph at 3.5 x 4.5 px, no heavier than 200 KB and no lighter than 10 KB.
- A signature at 3.5 x 1.5 px, no heavier than 30 KB and no lighter than 4 KB.
| Item | Size | Format | Max file size | Min | DPI | File name |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photo | 3.5 x 4.5 | JPEG | 200 KB | 10 KB | 200 | Passport_Photograph |
| Signature | 3.5 x 1.5 | JPEG | 30 KB | 4 KB | 200 | Signature |
The CUET numbers, and why they matter
Unlike exams that quote centimetres, CUET gives a pixel dimension. That makes the requirement exact rather than resolution dependent: 3.5 x 4.5 pixels is what the portal measures.
There are two limits to satisfy for CUET, not one. The upper bound on the photo is 200 KB and the lower bound is 10 KB; the signature runs 4 KB to 30 KB. Compression that overshoots is easy to fix by lowering quality again, but a file under the floor cannot be fixed by compressing further, it needs a larger source image.
The CUET form expects a specific file name pattern. The stored name is Passport_Photograph. Use the name the tool generates rather than the name your camera gave the file, since the portal validates the name as well as the image.
If the CUET application refuses your file
- A rejected CUET file at this weight limit is nearly always about the picture rather than the numbers. Confirm the dimensions in the comparison table first, and if those are correct, change the photograph instead of compressing harder.
- The signature is the second half of the CUET form and is judged on its own 3.5 x 1.5 px box. If it is rejected, the usual cause is loose cropping: a signature scanned with a wide white margin carries more weight than the 30 KB allowance and fails even though the writing itself looks right.
- If the same file is refused twice with identical settings, stop retrying and re-read the notification. Requirements do get revised by corrigendum, and the numbers stored in this tool reflect the specification as recorded.
