What LIC recruitment involves
The Life Insurance Corporation of India recruits for its branches and divisional offices across the country, including assistants, assistants in administrative departments, and programme development and service officers. Applications are filed through the corporation's own recruitment portal on its official site, and the uploaded photograph and signature stay on the candidate record through to document verification.
The stored specification follows the same general pattern used by other large public sector recruiters: a preferred photograph of 200 by 230 pixels and a preferred signature of 140 by 60, with the physical 3.5 by 4.5 and 3.5 by 1.5 centimetre frames also published, plus a left thumb impression and a hand written declaration as separate images. The thumb impression is specified at 4 by 3 centimetres here rather than the 3 by 3 figure used by some comparable recruiters, which is the one figure worth copying carefully from the LIC notice rather than from another bank's form.
The board publishes its notices at www.licindia.in. The numbers on this page come from the recorded specification, and the notice on that site is the authority whenever the two differ.
This page sets out the numbers LIC actually asks for. It is not a general guide to cropping or to the tool interface, because those instructions do not change from one exam to the next and they are written up separately.
What the LIC form asks you to upload
This form asks for 4 separate images, which is more than most examinations require, and each one is validated on its own. They are:
- A photograph at 200 x 230 px, no heavier than 50 KB and no lighter than 20 KB.
- A signature at 140 x 60 px, no heavier than 20 KB and no lighter than 10 KB.
- A left thumb impression at 240 x 240 px, up to 50 KB.
- A hand written declaration at 800 x 400 px, up to 100 KB.

The LIC numbers, and why they matter
LIC publishes its sizes in both units, which means the record is offering two ways to express the same kind of requirement. Pick the row that matches how your own advertisement is worded: centimetres when the notification states a physical frame, pixels when it states a resolution. They are alternatives published for different notifications, not a sequence to apply in turn.
Resolution appears more than once in the LIC record, at 200 and 96 DPI. That is not a contradiction: the physical frame is the same in both, and the choice is how densely the image is stored. Where an advertisement is silent, the 200 DPI row is the safer one, because a denser image still measures correctly at a lower resolution while the reverse is not true.
Worth knowing that LIC works in both directions. The photograph must be no larger than 50 KB and no smaller than 20 KB, and the signature no larger than 20 KB with 10 KB as its floor. Overshooting the ceiling is the usual mistake; undershooting the floor is the one that surprises people who compress hard.
The LIC record offers 3 photograph options and 3 signature options: 200 x 230 px; 3.5 x 4.5 cm. These come from different notifications and different recruitment streams rather than from one form, so there is no single right answer to which to use. Take the size from the advertisement you are actually applying under, and if it names a size that is not listed here, enter it by hand in the width and height fields.
Several LIC presets are labelled preferred in the stored specification, including 200 x 230 px for the photo and 140 x 60 px for the signature and 240 x 240 px for the document. The label signals what the board expects to see most often across its notifications. It is a preference rather than a restriction, but where the notification leaves the choice open the preferred row is the safer pick.
There are 2 further uploads on this form, covering a left thumb impression, a hand written declaration. They sit alongside the photograph rather than replacing it, and each carries its own ceiling, so a file prepared for the portrait is the wrong starting point for them.
If the LIC application refuses your file
- When LIC refuses a file, weight is the first thing to check, because 50 KB leaves limited room. Look at the final size on the result card. If it sits above the limit, the source was cropped too loosely: tighten the frame and compress again.
- The signature is judged on its own 140 x 60 px box and is not rescued by a correct photograph. If it is rejected, the usual cause is loose cropping: a signature scanned with a wide white margin carries more weight than the 20 KB allowance and fails even though the writing itself looks right.
- Two identical rejections usually mean the specification moved rather than the file. Compare the table above against the current notification before you generate a third attempt.
Frequently Asked Questions
Cropping to a face, choosing a compression level, and the reasons a correctly sized photograph still gets refused do not vary by exam, so those are covered in one place rather than repeated here. See the complete photo and signature guide.
