DOCX to PDF Converter
Turn a .docx file into a simple, text-only PDF. Your Word file is read in the browser, and only its extracted text is sent to the server, which lays it out on A4 portrait pages in 11-point Helvetica and returns the PDF without storing it. Formatting, images and tables are not kept; non-Latin scripts are not supported.

A Quick, Text-Only Route From Word to PDF
The DOCX to PDF Converter turns the words in a Word document into a plain, readable PDF. It is the right choice when what matters is the text: a draft you want someone to read on a phone without Word, an essay a portal insists on receiving as PDF, meeting notes for a shared folder, or a plain letter. It is not a replica of your Word layout. The tool deliberately produces a simple text-based PDF, as the page's own subtitle says, and knowing what that means up front saves surprises.
What the Finished PDF Looks Like
Every PDF made here follows one fixed design, set in the server code:
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Paper | A4, portrait |
| Margins | 40 points on each side (about 14 mm) |
| Font | Helvetica, 11 points |
| Alignment | Left aligned, starting at the top |
| Pages | As many as the text needs; long documents flow onto further pages |
| Content | The document's text only, paragraph by paragraph |
| File name on download | Your Word file's name with .pdf, for example essay.docx becomes essay.pdf |
Headings come out at the same size as body text. Bold, italics, colours and fonts are dropped. Tables become their cell text on separate lines. Images, charts, text boxes, headers, footers and page numbers do not appear. Automatic list numbers and bullet symbols are not part of the extracted text either.
How the Conversion Works
There are two stages, and they happen in different places:
- In your browser: the page reads your .docx file with Mammoth.js 1.7.2 and extracts its raw text. The Word file itself is never uploaded.
- On the server: that extracted text, together with your file name, is posted to the site's PDF endpoint. The tc-lib-pdf library lays the text out on A4 pages and the server sends the PDF straight back in the response. The code does not save the PDF on the server; your browser holds it until you download it.
So the document's words do travel to the server, briefly, but the original .docx with its images, comments, tracked changes and metadata does not.
Step by Step
- The settings panel shows "Running in DOCX to PDF mode." There is no mode switcher on this page.
- Drag your Word file onto Drop a DOCX file here, or press Select File and browse a document from your device. The file picker is limited to .docx files.
- Check the file line under the drop area, which shows the name and size in KB.
- Press Convert Now. The Status tile shows Processing and then Completed, with the message "DOCX was converted to a text-based PDF. Use the PDF download button to save it."
- Press Download PDF.
- Optional: the extracted text also appears in Output, with Words and Characters counts. Copy Text and Download Text give you the same text as a clipboard copy or a .txt file.
- Press Clear before converting another document.
Language and Character Support
The PDF uses the standard Helvetica font. In a test of the same server routine, English text and Western European characters such as é, ñ and the euro sign came through correctly, while Cyrillic and Chinese characters did not; they were replaced with question marks. If your document is written in Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese or another non-Latin script, this converter will not give a usable PDF. Export to PDF from your word processor instead.
When This Converter Is a Good Choice
- Text-heavy documents: essays, articles, letters, statements, minutes.
- Situations where a clean, distraction-free PDF is actually preferable, for example sharing a draft for proofreading.
- Devices without Word installed, since everything needed runs in the browser plus one server request.
- Getting a word count and a PDF in one pass.
When it is not
- CVs, brochures, forms and anything where layout carries meaning.
- Documents with essential images, charts, equations or tables.
- Legal or academic submissions with mandated fonts, spacing or page numbers.
- Documents in non-Latin scripts, as explained above.
For those, use your office software's own "Save as PDF" or "Export to PDF" option, which keeps the design.
This Converter Compared With Exporting From Word
| Question | This page | Word or LibreOffice export |
|---|---|---|
| Needs office software installed? | No, a browser is enough | Yes |
| Keeps fonts, images and tables? | No | Yes |
| Strips comments and tracked changes? | Yes, only the body text is used | Depends on export settings |
| Page size choice | A4 portrait only | Whatever the document uses |
| Typical result size | Small, since it holds only text | Larger when images are embedded |
In short, this page wins on convenience and on producing a lean, clean copy; a desktop export wins whenever appearance matters. Many people use both: this converter for a quick reading copy on the go, and a proper export for the final version that gets submitted or printed.
The Font Size and Line Spacing Fields
The page shows Text Font Size (default 11) and Line Spacing (default 1.4). The current code does not send these values to the server, so the PDF always uses 11-point Helvetica regardless of what you enter. They are best left alone until that changes.
Tips for Better Results
- Convert old .doc files to .docx in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs first; only .docx is read.
- If your document relies on numbered headings or lists, type the numbers as real text before converting, because automatic numbering is lost.
- Add blank lines between sections in the source if you want clearer separation in the PDF.
- Open the PDF before sending it to confirm nothing important was a picture or a text box.
Things to Avoid
- Password-protected .docx files cannot be read; remove the password first.
- Do not use this for documents whose text you are not allowed to send to an outside server; the extracted words are posted for PDF generation.
- Do not expect the Download PDF button to work before a successful conversion; it stays disabled until then.
Limitations
One document at a time. Text only, fixed A4 portrait layout, fixed 11-point Helvetica, no headers, footers, page numbers or images, no password protection on the output and no support for non-Latin scripts. If you also need DOCX to Text or PDF to Text, the combined Document Converter offers all three modes, and the DOCX to Text converter focuses on plain text output. To join several PDFs afterwards, use Merge PDF.
