How to Use This Tool

Choose an asset from 20 supported instruments - including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Apple, NVIDIA, the S&P 500 ETFs (VOO, SPY), and gold - then enter your periodic investment amount, the frequency (daily, weekly or monthly), and the date range. The calculator pulls real daily closing prices and simulates every single purchase on its due date.

Features

  • Real historical prices - Daily closing prices from Binance (crypto) and Stooq (stocks, ETFs and gold), dating back to 2017.
  • Full investment simulation - Every purchase is executed at that day price, with running units and invested totals.
  • DCA vs lump sum - Compare your periodic investing result with investing the same total amount on day one.
  • Best and worst months - See which months delivered the biggest gains and losses for the asset in your window.
  • Value-over-time chart - Visualize your portfolio value climbing against the total amount invested.
  • Monthly breakdown table - Every purchase: date, price, amount, units bought, total units and total invested.
  • 30+ currencies - All results convert into your local currency with live exchange rates.

Understanding the Numbers

The simulation invests the same amount on every scheduled date using that day closing price. Total units = sum of amount / price per purchase; current value = total units x the latest price in the range. ROI = (current value - total invested) / total invested. The lump sum comparison invests the full amount once, on the start date, and holds until the end of the range.

FAQ

Short answers for the questions users ask before trusting the result.

Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) means investing a fixed amount on a regular schedule regardless of price. You buy more units when the price is low and fewer when it is high, which smooths the average purchase price over time and removes the stress of timing the market.

Not always. Lump sum investing captures the full market return from day one, so it usually wins when prices trend upward. DCA wins when prices fall early and recover later, because later purchases are cheaper. The calculator shows both results side by side for your exact range.

Crypto prices come from Binance daily candles, with Coinbase as a fallback. Stock, ETF and gold prices come from Stooq, with Yahoo Finance as a fallback. History is fetched once per day per asset and cached, so results are fast and consistent.

The simulation only invests on real trading days. If your start or end date falls on a weekend or holiday, the first or last purchase shifts to the nearest trading day with data. Dates before January 2017 or after the latest available price are not supported.
