TXT Viewer & Reader

TXT Viewer and Reader opens a plain-text file in the browser and shows it in a comfortable reading view. Drop in a .txt file, and the page displays the text with a file-size summary, line count, word count, character count and an estimated reading time.

It is useful for quick inspection when you do not want to open a full editor, especially on a device where a text editor is not installed. The file is read locally, so the content does not need to be uploaded.

The viewer is read-only. It can copy the text or download it again, but it cannot edit the file or save changes back to the original.

Learn how the tool works and when to use it.

What the viewer shows

After you choose a file, the page displays its name, size and a set of reading statistics. The text appears in a scrollable area with preserved line breaks and wrapping. A toolbar offers Copy, Download, New File and a reset action.

The line count is based on the file's newline characters. The word count splits on whitespace, and the character count reflects the loaded string. The reading-time estimate divides the word count by 180 words per minute and rounds up, a common approximation for adult reading speed.

The display uses a pre-wrap style, so long lines wrap instead of forcing horizontal scrolling. That is easier to read on a phone, but it can make code or fixed-width tables harder to compare. For those files, use an editor with a monospace view.

How to open a text file

  1. Click the dropzone or drag a .txt file onto it.
  2. Wait for the browser to read the file as UTF-8.
  3. Read the file summary and the statistics row.
  4. Scroll through the text in the reading area.
  5. Use Copy to put the content on the clipboard, or Download to save a copy.
  6. Click New File to clear the view and open another document.

The picker accepts .txt and text/plain. Drag-and-drop checks the file extension. A file with a different extension may be rejected even if it contains plain text; rename it to .txt if needed.

Encoding and special characters

The reader uses UTF-8. That covers most modern text files, including English, many European languages and emoji. A file saved in an older encoding such as Windows-1252 or Shift-JIS may display garbled characters because the browser is told to interpret the bytes as UTF-8.

If the text looks wrong, open it in an editor that lets you choose the encoding and re-save it as UTF-8. The viewer does not provide an encoding picker or a repair mode.

Line endings are preserved in the display. Windows CRLF and Unix LF both appear as line breaks. A file with no final newline still displays normally, but the line count may be one less than an editor that counts a trailing empty line.

Reading and copying

The reading area has a maximum height and its own scrollbar, so a long document does not push the rest of the page out of view. The text remains selectable. Copy uses the browser clipboard; if the permission prompt appears, allow it or select the text manually.

Download creates a new plain-text blob with the original filename. It is a copy, not an edit. If you change the text elsewhere and want the viewer to show the new version, open the file again.

The viewer does not search, highlight, annotate or bookmark. For a long reference document, use your browser's find command on the rendered text, or open the file in a full editor.

Large files and limits

There is no explicit size limit in the page, despite the “supports large files” label. The entire file is read into memory and rendered as one text block, so a very large file can freeze the tab or crash a low-memory device. For a multi-megabyte log, use a dedicated viewer or split the file.

An empty file may show a word count of one because of the way the split is calculated. Treat the statistics as a quick estimate, not a precise linguistic analysis.

The viewer does not parse Markdown, CSV or source code. It displays the raw text. Use a format-specific viewer when the structure matters.

Privacy and limitations

The file is read locally with the browser's FileReader API. The page does not upload it to Newisty and does not keep a history. The copy and download actions are local browser operations.

Do not open a sensitive file on a shared device if you cannot clear the download or clipboard afterward. The viewer itself does not store the file, but the browser's download folder and clipboard may.

The tool is a reader, not an editor, converter or encryption tool. It cannot open .docx, .pdf or .rtf files, and it cannot recover a corrupted text file. If the file will not load, check the extension and try re-saving it as UTF-8 plain text.

Reading long documents

The viewer is best for a document you want to scan rather than edit. Use the scroll area to move through the text, and the statistics to decide whether the file is the one you expected. A line count that is much lower than the file size suggests long lines or a binary file mislabeled as .txt.

For a long article, the reading-time estimate helps you plan. It assumes 180 words per minute, which is a rough average. Technical material, code and legal text are slower. The number is a convenience, not a promise.

The page does not remember your scroll position after a refresh. If you need to resume later, keep the file open in a tab or use a dedicated reader with bookmarks.

Comparing two text files

The viewer opens one file at a time. To compare two versions, open them in separate tabs and use the statistics and the visible content to spot differences, or use a dedicated diff tool. The viewer does not highlight changes, align lines or merge edits.

If the files are logs, sort or filter them in a text editor first. The viewer is a reader, not a query tool. A line count and a word count are useful for a quick sanity check, but they will not tell you which line changed.

For code, use an editor with line numbers and syntax highlighting. The pre-wrap display here can obscure indentation and make a missing brace hard to see.

Accessibility and comfortable reading

The text is rendered as selectable content, so a browser's zoom and text-size controls work normally. The line length follows the container width; on a wide monitor, a very long line can be tiring to read. Resize the window or use your browser's reader mode if you need a narrower measure.

The page does not provide a dark-mode switch, font-size control or line-spacing control. Those come from the browser or the operating system. If you need a dyslexia-friendly font or a high-contrast theme, apply it at the browser level.

The viewer does not read the text aloud. For audio, use a text-to-speech tool after copying the content. Check the pronunciation of names and technical terms before relying on the audio.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Short answers for the questions users ask before trusting the result.

No. The file is read locally in your browser and is not sent to Newisty.

It is designed for .txt and text/plain files. Other formats need a different viewer.

The viewer reads UTF-8. A file saved in another encoding may need to be re-saved as UTF-8 in a text editor.

No explicit limit is enforced, but very large files can freeze the tab because the whole document is loaded into memory.

No. The viewer is read-only. You can copy or download the content, then edit it elsewhere.

It divides the word count by 180 words per minute and rounds up. It is an estimate, not a precise measure.
