What is Sitemap in SEO?
Sitemaps are an important part of Search Engine Optimization. They help Google and other search engines find and crawl your website. They are also a way to help your website visitors find the content they're looking for more easily. Sitemaps are XML files submitted to search engines to facilitate indexing and improve the accessibility of a website's content.
What is XML Sitemap?
XML Sitemap is a new sitemap protocol that has been created to improve the accessibility of web pages about organic search results. You can create a sitemap manually or use a tool like Google's Sitemap Generator or xml-sitemaps.com.
Once you have created your sitemap file(s), you need to submit them to each search engine that supports them - typically through their Webmaster Tools interface (Google) or by adding specific lines of code to your robots.txt file (Bing).
What is XML sitemap generator?
Sitemaps are an important part of SEO, and an XML sitemap generator is a web-based software tool to generate XML sitemaps to submit them to top search engines. It contains all of the links for your website.
An XML sitemap allows you to list all the pages on your website, as well as any other information you want to include (like how often the page is updated). Also include the links for your website in a format that major search engines can automatically read. This information is then used by search engines to help index your site.
What is XML sitemap in SEO?
Sitemaps are an important part of a well-rounded SEO strategy. They help Google and other search engines find and crawl your website more effectively, which can result in better indexing and improved visibility for your content. Sitemaps also make it easier for your website's visitors to find the content they're looking for, by providing a roadmap of your site's structure.
They are also a way to help your website visitors find the content they're looking for more easily. Sitemaps are XML files submitted to search engines to facilitate indexing and improve the accessibility of a website's content. This XML file has to be submitted to search engines via their Webmaster Tools interface.
To create an XML sitemap, you'll need to use a sitemap generator tool or plugin. Once you have created the file, you'll need to submit it to the search engines via their Webmaster Tools interface. Keep in mind that not all websites require a sitemap - if yours doesn't, there's no need to create one!
Types of sitemaps
There are two types of sitemaps: HTML sitemaps, which display all the pages on your site as links; and XML sitemaps, which list URLs along with additional information like page priority, last modification date, and how often the page is updated.
Manual list or automatic crawl
Manual mode is the predictable option. Paste one absolute URL per line, choose a last-updated date, a change frequency and a priority, and the generator writes a urlset with one entry per unique URL. Duplicate lines are removed, so pasting the same address twice does not create two entries.
Automatic mode starts from one address and follows links it finds. You control the maximum depth from 0 to 10, the maximum number of URLs from 1 to 1,000 (the default is 120), a delay from 0 to 5,000 milliseconds between requests and a timeout from 3 to 90 seconds. Two switches decide whether the crawl respects robots.txt and whether query-string URLs are allowed.
The crawler fetches HTML on the server; it is not a full browser. Links inserted by JavaScript after load may be missed, and a page that blocks bots may return little or nothing. Check the sample list and the URL count before downloading.
What lastmod, changefreq and priority mean
lastmod is the date of the last meaningful change, entered as day-month-year. changefreq is a hint about how often the page changes, not a schedule that forces a crawl. priority is a relative value from 0.0 to 1.0 within your own site; it does not raise a page above another site's results.
Google has said it ignores priority and changefreq, and it uses lastmod only when the dates are consistently accurate. Do not update lastmod on every deploy if the content did not change. An honest, stable date is more useful than a fresh one.
Sitemap limits and validation
The sitemap protocol allows up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per file. If your site is larger, split it into several sitemaps and use a sitemap index. The automatic crawler here caps a single run at 1,000 URLs, so a large site needs more than one run or a different tool.
Every entry should be an absolute URL on the site you control, with special characters XML-escaped. Do not list redirects, 404 pages, noindex pages or duplicates that canonicalise elsewhere. A sitemap helps discovery; it does not guarantee indexing or ranking.
Publish and submit
Download sitemap.xml, upload it to the site root so it resolves at /sitemap.xml, and add a Sitemap line to robots.txt with the full address. Then submit it in Google Search Console and, if you use it, Bing Webmaster Tools. Check the report after a few days for fetch errors and discovered URLs.
Regenerate the file when you add or remove important pages. For a small static site, that may be occasional; for a blog or store, automate it so the sitemap does not drift away from the real URL set.
