GitHub README Generator

What the GitHub README generator does

This page builds a starter README.md for a GitHub repository. You fill in a project name, a short description, a license, optional repository details, a feature list and install or usage text. The page then writes Markdown with sections for features, installation, usage, contributing and license. It runs entirely in the browser. The result is a draft you can copy or download and then edit to match the real project.

Project name and description

The project name becomes the main heading. The default is My Project, so replace it before generating. The description sits under the heading and should explain what the project does in one or two sentences. A good description helps a visitor decide whether to read further. Avoid a slogan that says nothing, and avoid claiming production readiness or performance that the repository cannot support.

License choices

The license menu offers MIT, Apache-2.0, GPL-3.0, BSD-3-Clause, Unlicense and None. The choice adds a license section and, when repository details are available, a license badge. The generator does not write the full license text or choose a license for you. License compatibility is a legal question, so read the actual license and include the required LICENSE file in the repository. Selecting None does not make a project public domain.

Badges and repository details

The badge toggles can add a license badge, a build badge and a stars badge. Badges need an owner and repository name to form their URLs. The build badge uses a hardcoded workflow filename, so it will not match every project. A broken badge is worse than no badge. Generate the Markdown, then check each badge URL and remove or fix any that does not point to a real workflow or repository.

Features, installation and usage

Features are entered one per line and become a bullet list. Installation text is placed in a bash code block by default. Usage text is plain by default. Keep commands short, realistic and tested. Do not paste a full tutorial into the installation field; link to longer documentation instead. If the project has no installation step, say so or remove the section rather than leaving an empty code block.

Generating and downloading

Press Generate to build the Markdown. The output appears in a read-only editor with character, line and section counts. Use Copy for the clipboard or Download to save README.md. The generator does not write to GitHub or open a pull request. You still need to review the file, add screenshots or diagrams, and commit it to the repository. The page does not store a copy on the server.

A README is more than a template

A useful README explains the problem, the audience, the quick start and where to get help. It often needs a screenshot, a architecture note, a compatibility table, a roadmap and a security policy. This generator covers a basic skeleton, not every section. Treat the output as a first draft. Delete sections that do not apply, and add the details a new contributor actually needs.

What the generator does not do

It does not detect the language, framework or package manager. It does not read the repository or verify that the install command works. It does not create a LICENSE file, a CONTRIBUTING guide, a code of conduct or CI configuration. It does not generate screenshots or alt text. It does not check links or badges. Those tasks still belong to the maintainer.

Privacy and local processing

The form runs in the browser, so the text is not sent to Newisty. The generated README stays in the page until you clear it or close the tab. Downloading the file writes it to your device. If you use a shared computer, clear the form after you finish. The page does not publish the repository or contact GitHub.

Limits and common problems

There is no stated length limit because the generation is local. Very long feature lists can make the editor unwieldy, so keep the starter list short. If a badge is broken, check the owner, repository and workflow name. If the download is empty, generate the README first. If the Markdown looks wrong, inspect the source for an unclosed code fence or a line that starts with a Markdown character.

When to use it

Use it when you are starting a repository and want a consistent first README, or when an existing README is missing basic sections. It is also useful for a small internal project where a full documentation site would be overkill. For a large open-source project, start from the template and then add the governance, support and security sections that contributors expect.

What not to do

Do not publish the generated text without reviewing it. Do not claim a license you have not included. Do not leave placeholder names, badges or commands. Do not use a build badge for a workflow that does not exist. Do not paste secrets or private repository details into a public README. Do not treat a polished README as a substitute for working code or tests.

Making the README useful

A template only saves the first few minutes. The useful part is the context only the maintainer knows: what problem the project solves, which version is stable, what the prerequisites are, how to run the tests, where to report a bug and what the project does not support. Add those details in plain language. A reader should be able to decide whether to use the project and get a first successful run without guessing. Remove sections that do not apply instead of leaving empty headings.

Placeholders and final review

Search the generated README for placeholder names, example URLs and commands that do not exist. Open every link and badge. Confirm the license section matches the actual LICENSE file. Ask someone who has never used the project to follow the quick start on a clean machine. A README is finished only when a new reader can get a first successful result without asking the maintainer for missing steps.
