How BSMMU admission is filed

Bangladesh Medical University in Dhaka, which carried the name Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for most of its life, is the country's premier postgraduate medical institution. Its admission tests for programmes such as the Master of Science in Nursing, residency intake and postgraduate degrees are handled through the university's own online admission system, where the application fee is first deposited at a Pubali Bank branch and the deposit slip is then scanned and uploaded with the rest of the application.

That receipt is the reason this page carries three uploads instead of two. The photograph is a 500 by 500 pixel square inside a 10 to 150 KB window, the signature a 300 by 200 pixel square capped at 100 KB, and the bank receipt is scanned and stored as its own 500 by 500 pixel square with the same 10 to 150 KB range as the portrait. All three sit on low 10 KB floors, which is a sign that the intended source material is clean scans rather than squeezed photographs. Take the receipt photo flat on a plain sheet in even light and it will fall well inside its window without any aggressive compression.

This page sets out the numbers BSMMU actually asks for. It is not a general guide to cropping or to the tool interface, because those instructions do not change from one exam to the next and they are written up separately.

What the BSMMU form asks you to upload

3 images go into this form. That is the detail most candidates miss, because the photograph and signature are the obvious ones and the remaining uploads are easy to overlook until the portal rejects the submission. They are:

• A photograph at 500 x 500 px, no heavier than 150 KB and no lighter than 10 KB.
• A signature at 300 x 200 px, no heavier than 100 KB and no lighter than 10 KB.
• A document image at 500 x 500 px, up to 150 KB.

The BSMMU numbers, and why they matter

Nothing here is quoted in centimetres or inches. BSMMU works in square pixel dimensions, so centring the subject inside a square canvas matters more than any conversion factor. The usual instinct to crop tight to the shoulders and head does not produce the shape this portal validates.

BSMMU works in both directions on file weight. The ceiling is 150 KB but there is effectively no meaningful floor, so the only number that can cause a refusal is the upper one. That means you can compress as hard as quality allows without worrying about dropping below a published minimum.

There is a further upload on this form, covering a document image. They sit alongside the photograph rather than replacing it, and each carries its own ceiling, so a file prepared for the portrait is the wrong starting point for them.

If the BSMMU application refuses your file

• When BSMMU refuses a file, weight is the first thing to check, because 150 KB leaves limited room. Look at the final size on the result card. If it sits above the limit, the source was cropped too loosely: tighten the frame and compress again.
• For the BSMMU signature, keep the crop tight around the ink. The 300 x 200 px frame is small, so every extra millimetre of empty paper is weight you do not have, and the 100 KB ceiling does not leave room for it.
• A third attempt with the same settings will produce the same result. Read the current notification again, because the specification is corrected by corrigendum from time to time and the values in this tool follow the specification as recorded.
