What this tool does

This editor crops an image to a square and resizes it to 256 by 256 pixels. The crop is optional: you can keep the whole image and let the resize step fit it into the square, or enable the cropper and choose exactly what stays in frame.

The processed file is created on the server and returned as a download. The page does not add text, borders, filters or layers. It is a focused square-image tool for icons, avatars and small graphics.

Why 256 by 256

256 by 256 is a common icon and avatar size. It is large enough for a desktop shortcut, an app icon preview, a forum avatar or a small game texture, and it scales down cleanly to 128, 64 or 32 pixels. A square frame also avoids the awkward letterboxing that appears when a wide image is forced into a circular avatar.

It is not a universal requirement. A favicon may need 32 by 32 or 48 by 48, a social profile may want 400 by 400 or more, and a print asset needs a much larger file. Use 256 when the destination asks for it or when you need a small, square master that can be scaled down later.

Crop or resize

With the cropper enabled, drag the square box over the part of the image you want. The box is locked to a 1:1 ratio, so the output is always square. With the cropper disabled, the whole image is resized to 256 by 256, which stretches a non-square original.

Stretching a face or a logo is usually a mistake. Crop instead, or place the subject on a square canvas in a proper editor before using this page. A wide logo can be centred with empty space above and below rather than squeezed.

The crop is drawn in the browser on a canvas, then the selected area is uploaded for processing. A very large source may take a moment to render; close other heavy tabs if the preview stalls.

Quality, format and transparency

The quality default is 95 percent. That preserves most detail for a small icon, but the file is still limited by the 256-pixel frame: fine text and thin lines can disappear. Check the result at 100 percent and at the size it will actually be displayed.

The format selector lists the server's output formats, typically JPEG, PNG, WEBP, GIF and BMP. PNG or WEBP is the better choice when the icon needs transparency. JPEG fills transparent areas with a solid colour and is better for photographic avatars.

GIF is supported as an output but animation is not preserved. BMP is usually much larger and offers no advantage for a web icon.

Process and download

Choose the crop, format, quality and dimensions, then press Process. The page uploads the selected image, waits for the server and enables the Download button. The returned file name may differ from the original.

If processing fails, check the file type and size. The upload limit is 20 MB per image. A corrupt file or an unsupported format can fail before the resize step.

Privacy and limits

The final image is uploaded to the server for processing. The crop preview is local, but the processed file leaves your device. Do not upload private identity documents or confidential client assets unless you are comfortable with that.

The page handles one image per run, does not batch, does not preserve EXIF metadata and does not offer a local-only export. A source smaller than 256 pixels will be upscaled and may look soft.

Common uses

Prepare a forum avatar, an app icon draft, a small game texture, a square thumbnail or a consistent icon for a documentation set. A square master is easy to scale down; it is harder to recover detail after a small file has been stretched.

For an icon with text, keep the text large and simple. A 256-pixel frame cannot hold a paragraph. For a photographic avatar, centre the face and leave a little space around the head so a circular mask does not cut it off.

Designing an icon that reads at small sizes

A 256-pixel icon is often displayed at 64, 48 or 32 pixels. Fine lines, small text and subtle gradients disappear at those sizes. Use a simple silhouette, two or three strong colours and a clear edge. Test the result at the size it will actually appear, not only in the 256-pixel preview.

If the icon will be shown in a circle, keep the important shape inside the centre and leave the corners quiet. A square logo with text across the full width will lose the ends when it is masked.

Preparing the source

Start with a square canvas or crop to a square before uploading. A wide logo can be centred with padding rather than stretched. Use a PNG or high-quality JPEG as the source, and avoid upscaling a tiny file to 256 pixels; the result will look soft.

For a transparent logo, keep the transparency in the source and export PNG or WEBP. A JPEG export will fill the transparent area with a solid colour, which may look wrong on a coloured page.

Square now, circle later

The file is square, but many interfaces display avatars in a circle. Keep the important shape inside the inscribed circle and leave the corners free of critical detail. A face should sit slightly above centre, with space around the head.

File size and quality

A 256-pixel PNG with transparency can be larger than expected, while a simple JPEG may be only a few kilobytes. The page does not target an exact KB value. Lower the quality if size matters, or keep PNG when transparency is required.

Common mistakes

Stretching a wide logo into a square, starting from a tiny 64-pixel file, exporting a transparent logo as JPEG, and filling the icon with text that is unreadable at 32 pixels are the usual problems. Each one is easy to avoid with a quick check at the final display size.

Crop instead of stretching, start from a larger source, use PNG when transparency matters, and simplify the design until it still reads when the icon is small.

If the icon still reads at 32 pixels, it will work almost anywhere it is displayed online. Check twice.
