21 Major Financial Giants to Launch New Stablecoin Company

Global banking leaders join forces for digital dollar

A group of 21 major financial institutions announced on Tuesday plans to establish a new company to develop and issue stablecoins. A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency designed to have a steady value, usually by being tied to a traditional currency like the U.S. dollar.

The consortium includes high-profile names such as Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Citi, Deutsche Bank, UBS, Santander, MUFG, and Fidelity Investments. The venture intends to launch its first product, a U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoin, in the first half of 2027.

Key details of the stablecoin initiative

  • The project involves 21 institutions from North America, Europe, East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
  • A U.S. dollar stablecoin is planned for early 2027, followed by a euro-denominated version.
  • The stablecoins will be used for wholesale, institutional, and retail markets.
  • The initiative aims to comply with the U.S. GENIUS Act and the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation.

Project goals and regulatory alignment

According to the announcement, the group plans to eventually expand into stablecoins for other G7 currencies. The next priority after the U.S. dollar offering will be a stablecoin tied to the euro. These digital assets are intended to improve cross-border payments and help settle transactions involving other digital assets.

The venture builds on a smaller initiative started in October 2025. At that time, 10 banks began exploring digital money backed 1:1 by reserves on public blockchains. The group has since more than doubled in size to its current 21 members.

Confirmed facts regarding the launch

It is confirmed that the consortium has been formed and has set a target launch window for the first half of 2027. The project is designed to operate within emerging regulatory frameworks in the United States and Europe. The list of participating banks, including giants like Citi and Goldman Sachs, is also confirmed.

Why this matters for traditional finance

The move represents a significant push by traditional financial institutions into the stablecoin market. This interest follows the creation of clearer rules for digital assets in various regions. Other institutions have also made similar moves, such as Fidelity's recent launch of its own stablecoin and Societe Generale issuing digital versions of the euro and dollar.

What happens next

The consortium will now work toward the formal formation of the new company. The launch of the U.S. dollar stablecoin is expected in the first half of 2027, though the group noted this is subject to meeting specific conditions and completing the company's setup.
