Anthropic posts $567 million Q3 operating loss as compute costs surge ahead of IPO
Anthropic swings to a $567 million operating loss in the third quarter
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI assistant, reported a $567 million operating loss for the third quarter. This reverses a $974 million operating profit in the previous quarter, according to an amended IPO filing published on Nov. 2, 2026.
The company says the loss came mainly from higher computing costs. Anthropic is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO), a process in which a private company sells shares to the public for the first time.
Key numbers from the filing
- Third-quarter revenue: $17 billion, up 47% from the previous quarter — slower than the 144% growth reported in Q2.
- Operating loss: $567 million, versus a $974 million operating profit the prior quarter.
- Net loss: $23.3 billion, largely from accounting charges.
- Purchase and lease commitments for computing and infrastructure: $895.4 billion over multiple years, with $69.8 billion due within 12 months of Sept. 30.
What the amended IPO filing says
An amended filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, published Monday, is the primary source for these figures. The filing is publicly available on the SEC's website.
According to the filing, the operating loss came primarily from two items: $5 billion in computing capacity obtained through costlier short-term commitments instead of cheaper multiyear agreements, and $2 billion in noncash charges tied to Anthropic's donation-matching program.
Price reductions and contractual discounts also cut third-quarter revenue by about $600 million, partly offsetting growth from higher usage.
Adjusted profit still grew, but the margin shrank
Excluding certain expenses — including stock-based compensation and charitable contributions — Anthropic reported adjusted operating profit of $2.5 billion, up from $2.2 billion the previous quarter. Its adjusted operating margin, however, fell to 15% from 19%.
Why the $23.3 billion net loss is much larger
The $23.3 billion net loss is mostly an accounting matter, not cash spent. The filing attributes it largely to a $21.9 billion charge from revaluing convertible notes and related instruments — financial instruments that can convert into company shares. The charge was driven mainly by increases in the company's enterprise valuation, meaning the paper value of the company rose.
Large long-term compute commitments
Anthropic disclosed $895.4 billion in computing and infrastructure-related purchase and lease commitments extending over multiple years, including agreements entered into after Sept. 30. About $69.8 billion of that is due within 12 months of that date. These are contracts to buy or lease computing capacity, the infrastructure needed to run AI models.
IPO timing
Anthropic filed to go public on Oct. 26, with pricing expected in mid-November, according to the report.
