Binance-owned CoinMarketCap acquires CoinGlass, which says its brand and pricing stay unchanged

CoinMarketCap buys CoinGlass to expand derivatives data

CoinMarketCap, the crypto price tracker owned by the exchange Binance, has acquired CoinGlass, a platform that tracks data from crypto derivatives markets. An exchange is a platform where people buy and sell crypto, and derivatives are contracts whose value is tied to an asset.

CoinMarketCap said the deal adds CoinGlass's open-interest, funding-rate, liquidation and options analytics to its market-data business. Open interest is the total value of derivative contracts still open, and a liquidation happens when a trader's position is closed by force because of losses. The financial terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

What the deal brings to CoinMarketCap

  • According to CoinMarketCap's Sept. 25 announcement, CoinGlass covers 28 exchanges and more than 2,500 instruments.
  • CoinMarketCap says CoinGlass has more than 5 million monthly users and 10,000 API customers. An API is a technical connection that lets other software pull data automatically.
  • CoinMarketCap puts its own monthly audience at 115 million people and says the purchase will place CoinGlass's view of leveraged positioning, liquidation clusters and funding rates next to the prices its users already check.
  • CoinGlass's API documentation lists Binance, OKX, Bybit and Coinbase among the exchanges it gathers data from across derivatives and spot markets.

CoinGlass says its tools and pricing will not change

CoinGlass told users the company will keep running on its own. "We keep our name and run as an independent business," CoinGlass said on X. It added: "Everything you use today is unchanged: site, app, free tools, API and pricing."

Binance's earlier commitment on CoinMarketCap independence

Binance acquired CoinMarketCap in 2020. Binance's announcement at the time said CoinMarketCap would remain an independent business, under a policy stating that "Binance has no bearing on CoinMarketCap rankings." That commitment addressed the link between an exchange and a service that measures exchanges. Binance's announcement also said CoinMarketCap already offered derivatives data when Binance bought it.

What is confirmed

CoinMarketCap, which Binance owns, has acquired CoinGlass. The price was not disclosed. CoinMarketCap published figures for CoinGlass's exchange coverage, instruments, users and API customers, and CoinGlass publicly stated that its brand, site, app, free tools, API and pricing remain as they are.

What is still unclear

The acquisition announcement promises independent operation but does not say who will oversee changes to CoinGlass's data methodology. It also does not explain how conflicts involving Binance and competing exchanges would be handled.

Why the ownership question matters

CoinGlass collects data from Binance and from exchanges that compete with it. The purchase puts a provider of data about competing trading venues under the same ownership as Binance. The announcement does not set out how that situation would be managed.
