Bitcoin rarely moves on jobs reports, six years of data show

U.S. jobs data expected Friday

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is set to release its nonfarm payrolls report on Friday morning. Economists expect the economy to have added around 56,000 jobs in August, rebounding from a surprise job loss in July. The unemployment rate is projected to rise slightly to 4.2%, while wage growth is expected to cool.

Bitcoin and other markets are closely watching the data because it can influence Federal Reserve interest rate decisions. A stronger jobs report could increase the likelihood of a rate cut later this month, which might push the U.S. dollar higher and create pressure on Bitcoin's price.

Bitcoin price action on past reports

Despite the attention the report receives, Bitcoin’s price rarely swings wildly on these days. An analysis of data from January 2020 through August 2026 shows that Bitcoin moved an average of just 2.1% on nonfarm payrolls days. This is consistent with its average daily volatility on regular, non-report days.

Over 79 reported employment releases in that period, Bitcoin prices closed higher on 39 days and lower on 40. The direction has been essentially a coin flip. While rare exceptions exist—such as an 11.4% jump in February 2022 or a 7.8% drop the following month—the typical reaction is minor.

For day traders, the report is noise

The data suggests that for day traders, the jobs report has little predictive value and often acts as a non-event. Bitcoin’s intraday reaction is remarkably split, meaning the report alone does not reliably signal which way the price will move.

However, volatility can still occur indirectly. If the jobs report triggers a significant movement in Treasury yields, Bitcoin and other markets may follow that trend. Traders are advised to stay alert for broader market shifts rather than relying on the employment data alone.
