BitGo Launches BitGo Labs to Build AI and Crypto Products
BitGo starts a lab to build new crypto products
BitGo Holdings, Inc. launched a new research and innovation unit on Wednesday. The unit is called BitGo Labs. Its job is to design, launch, and test what the company calls the next breakout application for digital assets.
The company said the unit will first focus on where artificial intelligence (AI) and crypto meet. BitGo said the AI economy still needs crypto financial infrastructure to handle small payments, allow instant settlement, and keep assets safe.
What BitGo says the new unit will do
- BitGo Labs will build products, not just study them, according to the company.
- Its first focus area is the meeting point of AI and crypto.
- The unit is starting with several projects, including a consumer app called Gokubu.
- BitGo says the unit will also publish research, build early versions of protocols, and work with builders, academics, and institutions in the crypto and AI communities.
- BitGo said every project must pass the same test: does it do something no existing system can do, and does it make people's lives measurably better?
What the company says about Gokubu
Gokubu is a consumer application that uses an AI-powered card meant to help users spend better. According to BitGo, the app is already live. It gives each user a personal AI financial assistant that is meant to help them get better rewards and more value from their transactions.
BitGo's CEO on AI agents and stablecoins
In an interview with The Block earlier this month, BitGo CEO Mike Belshe said AI agents will very likely use stablecoins as their native currency. A stablecoin is a digital token designed to hold a steady value, usually tied to a regular currency like the US dollar.
Belshe also said humans will likely stay in control of AI for much longer than some people expect.
His comments came after he was asked about an argument from Maelstrom CIO Arthur Hayes. Hayes has argued that stablecoins and other digital currencies cannot work as native currencies for AI agents because they cannot be converted directly into computing power.
Belshe told The Block that agents could end up paying each other in some form of value the agents choose, but that they would still connect to a human system.
What is confirmed
BitGo announced the launch of BitGo Labs in a press release. The unit's stated focus, its starting projects, the name Gokubu, and the live status of that app all come from BitGo's own announcement. Belshe's remarks about AI agents and stablecoins come from his interview with The Block.
What is still unclear
The source material does not say how much money BitGo is putting into BitGo Labs, how many people will work there, or what other projects it plans beyond Gokubu. It also does not give a timeline for future releases.
Why it matters
BitGo is a company in the digital asset space launching a unit aimed at finding new uses for crypto. If AI agents do end up needing to pay each other and settle transactions, that would create demand for crypto payment and custody infrastructure. Belshe's view that stablecoins would serve as the currency for those agents is his stated opinion, and it is disputed by Hayes. Whether AI agents will actually use stablecoins this way is not settled.
