BNY and Citadel Securities Complete First Tokenized Treasury Repo Transaction
Tokenized Treasury settles in minutes, then funds overnight loan
BNY and Citadel Securities completed a transaction in which a tokenized U.S. Treasury settled within minutes and was immediately used to raise overnight cash, the bank announced on October 13.
Citadel Securities purchased a two-year Treasury note through BNY on Tradeweb. A tokenized version of the security was recorded on BNY's private digital ledger and settled in minutes instead of the standard next-day settlement cycle. Citadel Securities then pledged that tokenized Treasury as collateral in an overnight triparty repo, with BNY providing the cash.
A triparty repo is a type of short-term loan where an agent handles collateral management and settlement between two parties. In this case, BNY acted as both the settlement provider and the cash lender.
What this marks
BNY described the transaction as the first use of tokenized assets on a major triparty repo platform. The distinction matters: earlier deals connected tokenized Treasuries with digital cash, but none combined fast tokenized settlement with an established institutional financing mechanism like triparty repos.
- On July 1, Franklin Templeton transferred a tokenized Treasury to Virtu Financial in exchange for USDCx on the Canton Network, with synchronized settlement, according to Tradeweb.
- On July 15, DTCC reported production transactions including a Treasury and repo delivery-versus-payment trade using DTC-tokenized assets.
- BNY previously partnered with Goldman Sachs in July 2025 on a money market fund tokenization initiative that created mirror tokens while BNY retained official books and settlements.
Transaction details and gaps
The announcement did not disclose the transaction's value, its exact execution date, or whether the cash leg of the repo also settled onchain. BNY's Global Collateral platform managed $8.2 trillion in collateral as of the second quarter of 2026.
What BNY plans next
In an accompanying paper from the BNY Institute, the bank said it expects to extend operating hours for traditional settlement platforms handling Fed-eligible assets later this year, with expansion into European and Asian trading hours in 2027. It also aims to support 24/7 clearing for both traditional and tokenized U.S. Treasuries in 2027.
Why this matters
For institutions that hold Treasuries and need to finance them, the transaction demonstrates a shorter path from purchasing a security to making it available as collateral. Connecting instant digital settlement to an established financing mechanism like triparty repos could reduce the time and friction involved in turning Treasury holdings into available cash.
What remains unclear
It is not yet clear how widely other banks or financial firms plan to adopt this approach, or whether the model will scale to larger transaction values. The cash settlement method and broader integration with existing repo infrastructure also remain unconfirmed in this pilot transaction.
