Crypto.com reduces CRO lockup rewards by 25% or more

Reward cuts for CRO lockups

Crypto.com announced that starting Thursday, September 10, it will lower the annual rewards for new CRO lockups by at least 25 %.

For the “Obsidian/Private” tier the rate drops to 6 % from 9 %; for the “Icy/Rose/Private” tier it falls to 5 % from 8.5 %; and for the “Jade/Indigo/Pro” tier it goes to 3 % from 4 %.

Key numbers

  • Reward reductions range from 1 % to 3 % points.
  • Lockup tiers affected: Obsidian/Private, Icy/Rose/Private, Jade/Indigo/Pro.
  • CRO price has fallen about 75 % over the past year.
  • The token is still roughly 93 % below its all‑time high reached in 2021.

History of term changes

Crypto.com’s predecessor, Monaco, removed its original asset‑contract model in 2017 and later raised card cashback rates to 2 % as a replacement. In 2018 the company promised 60 monthly CRO airdrops to former MCO holders, but the program stopped early in June 2019, leaving more than 50 promised distributions unpaid.

In 2020 Crypto.com forced MCO holders to swap to CRO and stopped supporting the unswapped token. Card cashback rates were cut in May 2022, briefly restored after community backlash, and later reduced again. By 2025, vendor rebates (Airbnb, Expedia, Amazon Prime) were removed from certain card tiers, and non‑staking spending rewards were eliminated for cards issued before November 2024.

In February 2021 a 70‑billion‑CRO burn was announced, but in 2025 the Cronos blockchain said it would re‑mint those tokens into a “Strategic Reserve,” effectively reversing the burn.

CRO price and supply context

The CRO token’s price has dropped 75 % in the last year, partly linked to a large supply increase intended to support a “Making America the world capital of crypto” initiative. The token remains 93 % below its peak from almost five years ago.

Cronos network issue

On the same day as the reward announcement, the Cronos blockchain erased several hours of activity, indicating ongoing uptime problems.
