Deutsche Bank Plans Asia Crypto Custody in 2027 as Germany Launch Nears
Deutsche Bank wants to offer crypto custody in Asia by 2027
Deutsche Bank plans to bring its crypto custody service to Asia in 2027. The German bank also expects to launch the service in Germany within weeks, according to Reuters, which cited the bank's corporate bank co-head.
Crypto custody means a bank holds digital assets for clients and handles the technology that keeps them secure. In this case, Deutsche Bank would manage clients' wallets and private keys. A private key is the secret code that controls access to crypto.
What the service will support
- The service will initially support bitcoin, ether and the stablecoins USDC, EURC and EURAU.
- A stablecoin is a crypto token designed to keep a steady value, usually tied to a currency such as the US dollar or euro.
- Corporate and institutional clients will be able to hold and transfer cryptocurrencies, with the bank handling the security technology.
- Deutsche Bank has worked with Bitpanda and Taurus on its custody plans.
BaFin authorization under MiCA rules
The bank received authorization from Germany's financial regulator, BaFin, under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) rules on October 12, according to the European Securities and Markets Authority's interim register. The German launch remains subject to regulatory approval.
Beyond custody: stablecoin conversion and digital bonds
Deutsche Bank also plans to offer stablecoin conversion, tokenized deposits and services that help clients issue digital bonds and other blockchain-based securities. A blockchain is a shared digital record of transactions.
Revenue target behind the expansion
The expansion is part of Deutsche Bank's broader plan to reach roughly 8% compound annual revenue growth in its corporate bank from 2025 to 2028, the co-head said.
What is confirmed
Deutsche Bank said in September that its initial offering would support bitcoin, ether and stablecoins including USDC, EURC and EURAU. The bank received BaFin authorization under MiCA on October 12, according to ESMA's interim register. The Asia expansion, the Germany launch timing and the revenue target come from Reuters, citing the bank's corporate bank co-head.
What is still unclear
It is not clear which Asian markets or financial services the bank will target first.
Why this matters
The Asia rollout would extend the custody service beyond Europe, at a time when banks are seeking a larger role in managing digital assets for institutional clients. Deutsche Bank joins rivals such as Standard Chartered and BBVA in offering crypto custody.
