Deutsche Bank Readies German Crypto Custody Launch, Plans Asia Push in 2027

German bank secures custody approval, sets sights on Asia

Deutsche Bank has received authorization from German regulators to offer crypto custody services, according to a register published by the European Securities and Markets Authority. The bank now plans to roll out the offering in Germany and expand into Asian financial centers in 2027.

The move comes as the digital asset economy continues to grow, with hundreds of billions of dollars now held in stablecoins — cryptocurrencies pegged to traditional currencies like the US dollar or euro.

What the bank will offer

The initial custody service will support Bitcoin, Ether, and a selection of stablecoins including Circle USDC, EURC, and AllUnity EUR. Deutsche Bank announced the launch details in a September press release aimed at institutional and corporate clients.

Regulatory progress

The authorization came under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, known as MiCA. Germany's Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, BaFin, granted the approval on Monday, and the European Securities and Markets Authority subsequently added Deutsche Bank to its interim MiCA register.

Expansion targets remain unclear

Cointelegraph contacted Deutsche Bank asking which Asian financial centers it plans to target first, but did not receive a response by publication time.

Gerald Podobnik, co-head of Deutsche Bank's corporate bank, told Reuters the expansion is tied to the bank's goal of achieving 8% compound annual growth in corporate banking by 2028.

Partnership background

Deutsche Bank has been laying groundwork for its crypto custody business since September 2023, when it partnered with Taurus, a cryptocurrency infrastructure platform, to support its custody plans.

Why this matters

The authorization marks a significant step for a major European bank entering the crypto custody space. Custody services allow institutions to securely store digital assets — a growing demand as traditional finance and the digital asset economy continue to converge.

What happens next

Deutsche Bank is expected to launch its German crypto custody service soon, with Asian expansion planned for 2027.
