Dogecoin wallet, app and payment teams combine to form Dogecoin Labs

Dogecoin wallet, app and payment tools come under one company

The teams behind a Dogecoin wallet, an application network and merchant payment tools are joining to form Dogecoin Labs. The goal is to give people who hold DOGE more places to use and spend their coins.

Dogecoin Labs is being formed in partnership with the Dogecoin Foundation. It will own and operate three products: MyDoge, a wallet (an app for holding and sending crypto); DogeOS, a network for building applications; and Such App, a tool for merchants to take payments. Jordan Jefferson, the founder of MyDoge and DogeOS, will lead the new company as CEO.

The setup is meant to connect three parts of a possible DOGE business ecosystem: developers build apps on DogeOS, holders find them through MyDoge, and merchants accept payments through Such App.

Key numbers and details

  • MyDoge says it has grown to more than 500,000 users without paid acquisition, meaning it did not pay for that growth.
  • Such App's beta version already supports invoices and in-person QR payments.
  • DogeOS opened a public test network on Sept. 30, letting developers build things such as lending services, exchanges and games using test DOGE.
  • The announcement says DOGE rose 3.9% in the past 24 hours and was recently trading around 8.2 cents.

What the Dogecoin Foundation and House of Doge are contributing

The Dogecoin Foundation and House of Doge, its commercial arm, are providing intellectual property and development teams to the effort. The foundation will keep doing its open-source development support, advocacy and community work. Dogecoin Labs will focus on products and commercial opportunities.

What is confirmed

The formation of Dogecoin Labs, the three products it will own, and Jefferson's role as CEO were announced in a statement shared with CoinDesk. MyDoge's user figure, Such App's beta payment features, and the Sept. 30 opening of the DogeOS public test network are all reported in that material.

What is still unclear

DogeOS is not finished. Three weeks after its test network opened, its public user guide still lists featured applications as "coming soon." The announcement does not say how many MyDoge wallet users are active or how many have tried apps built on DogeOS.

A planned security link between DogeOS and the Dogecoin blockchain also needs more work. DogeOS wants Dogecoin's own network to check mathematical proofs that its applications ran correctly. A proposed rule change to allow this is still a draft. Until that link is in place, users must rely on DogeOS's chosen operators and hardware to check that applications work. Dogecoin itself handles coin transfers, so these applications run on a separate system.

Why the DOGE use case push matters

Dogecoin is one of the oldest cryptocurrencies. It was created in 2013 as a joke and uses a shiba inu image. A common criticism of coins like DOGE is that holders have few everyday ways to spend them. Combining a wallet, an app network and merchant tools is an attempt by these teams to address that, though the applications and the security link are not yet complete.
