DogeOS Launches Public Testnet to Bring Apps to Dogecoin

DogeOS opens trial network for Dogecoin apps

DogeOS launched its public testnet on September 30. This is a trial version of a new application layer built on top of the Dogecoin network. Developers can now test applications without using real money.

The project aims to add smart contract functionality to Dogecoin, which was originally created as a joke in 2013. Smart contracts are self-running programs that execute agreements automatically. DogeOS keeps the original Dogecoin blockchain unchanged while adding this new software layer.

Key details of the launch

  • Fees on the testnet are paid in DOGE, the native coin of the network.
  • A faucet provides 42.069 test DOGE daily for developers.
  • The system is EVM-compatible, meaning tools built for Ethereum work here.
  • No date has been set for the mainnet launch, which would handle real funds.

Projects building on the network

Several teams are already developing on the platform. Superposition Finance is creating a lending protocol where users can borrow against deposited crypto. Derps is building a perpetual exchange, a place to bet on price movements without an expiration date.

USDoge is working on a stablecoin, a token designed to keep a steady value. Snag is aggregating prediction markets, which allow people to bet on real-world outcomes. PlaysOut, a game publisher, plans to release about 15 Doge-themed casual games by the end of 2025.

Leadership views on the expansion

Jordan Jefferson, founder and CEO of DogeOS, described the launch as the start of Dogecoin evolving from a single asset into a full ecosystem. Timothy Stebbing, director of the Dogecoin Foundation, supported the approach. He stated that the base layer of Dogecoin must remain pure while utility is added on top.

This separation exists because changing the core Dogecoin network is difficult. It requires community discussion, security checks, and approval from miners. The DogeOS team previously submitted a proposal in July 2025 to add zero-knowledge proofs to the base layer, but no changes have been made to the main chain yet.

Market context and future steps

The move comes as Dogecoin has lost significant value, falling about 75% from its highest point. Despite the launch of several Dogecoin ETFs, which are funds traded on stock exchanges, the coin remains in a downward trend.

The DogeOS team has not announced when the live mainnet will go online. Until then, the network remains a testing ground for developers to experiment with new financial tools and games.
