Ethereum Sets Sepolia Testnet Date for Upcoming Glamsterdam Upgrade

Glamsterdam arrives on Sepolia next week

Ethereum developers have scheduled the network's next major upgrade, named Glamsterdam, to activate on the Sepolia testnet on October 6. Sepolia is a testing environment where developers can try out changes before they reach the main Ethereum network.

The Ethereum Foundation announced on Monday that node operators running on Sepolia must update both their execution-layer and consensus-layer clients before the activation takes place. These updates are necessary to ensure the network functions correctly during the transition.

Key changes in the upgrade

  • The upgrade includes enshrined proposer-builder separation, which moves the process of handing off blocks from validators to specialized builders directly into the protocol.
  • New block-level access lists will be introduced to record which accounts and storage locations are used in each block.
  • Gas pricing, the fee users pay to process transactions, will change to better reflect the actual cost of creating and accessing data.
  • Smart contracts relying on fixed gas limits may need adjustments to work properly after the upgrade.

What the Ethereum Foundation stated

According to the Ethereum Foundation, the changes aim to reduce reliance on outside middleware by integrating builder-validator interactions into the core protocol. The foundation also warned that contracts using hardcoded gas limits might require code changes to adapt to the new pricing model.

Future roadmap and uncertainty

While the date for the Sepolia testnet is set, developers have not yet announced dates for the rollout on the Hoodi testnet or the main Ethereum network. The team is currently targeting the year 2027 for the next upgrade, known as Hegotá.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently suggested that Hegotá could be the network's last "normal" fork. He indicated that future development might shift focus toward advanced technologies like recursive STARKs and quantum-safe cryptography.
