Euronext suspends CoinShares Zcash ETP launch over settlement issues
Debut delayed over settlement setup
Euronext stopped the planned launch of CoinShares’ Zcash exchange-traded product, or ETP, on Euronext Paris. The product was set to begin trading on Wednesday but the exchange operator put it on hold instead.
An Euronext notice announced the suspension without giving a reason at first. The exchange operator said CoinShares’ Zcash ETP, trading under the code ZCSH, would not trade on Euronext Paris until further notice.
Later, Euronext’s press and communications manager Flavio Bornancin-Tomasella told Cointelegraph that the move was tied to operational settlement requirements. Euronext said it will remain suspended until standard settlement operations can be fully supported by the Central Securities Depository, or CSD, the institution that records and settles trades for securities.
Key points
- Euronext paused CoinShares’ Zcash ETP on Euronext Paris ahead of its scheduled debut.
- The exchange said the halt is limited to settlement operations that the CSD does not yet support.
- The notice gave no reason at first; Euronext provided more detail later.
- It would have been the fourth Zcash ETP listed in Europe.
What the exchange said
Flavio Bornancin-Tomasella said the measure was strictly limited to operational settlement requirements. He added that the suspension stays in effect until the CSD can fully support standard settlement operations.
Broader Zcash product context
CoinShares had announced on Wednesday that it planned to launch the Zcash ETP on Euronext Paris. Cointelegraph asked CoinShares for comment but did not get a response by the time of publication.
The product was set to be the fourth Zcash-based ETP listed in Europe. Earlier this year, other firms including 21Shares, Virtune and Valor launched Zcash ETPs.
Zcash is a cryptocurrency that can offer privacy features, and an ETP lets investors get exposure to its price without holding the coin directly.
What is still unclear
It is not yet known how long the suspension will last or when the CSD will be able to support the needed settlement operations. Euronext said the suspension would remain until further notice. CoinShares did not respond to requests for comment, so its plans for a rescheduled launch are unconfirmed.
Why it matters
European investors have growing access to crypto-backed products through exchange-traded products listed on regulated exchanges. This case shows that even approved products can be held up by back-office settlement setup rather than regulatory or legal objections.
