Fidelity inflows of $310M push Bitcoin ETFs to a near-flat week
Friday’s Fidelity surge offsets midweek losses
U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded net inflows of $433 million on Friday, September 18, according to Farside Investors. This inflow marked the second consecutive day of positive activity, helping the market recover from significant withdrawals recorded earlier in the week. Despite this rebound, the total gain did not fully close the gap left by the outflows seen on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund was the primary driver of Friday’s activity, adding $310.7 million in net capital. This amount was nearly 2.9 times the $108.4 million added by BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust. Smaller funds from Bitwise, ARK 21Shares, and VanEck also saw positive flows, indicating that investor interest spread beyond the two largest providers.
Weekly numbers show a near-breakeven result
- Friday’s net inflows totaled $433 million, with Fidelity contributing the vast majority.
- Combined inflows from Thursday and Friday reached $592.5 million, partially offsetting the $746.3 million withdrawn during the previous two sessions.
- The two-day rebound left a net gap of $153.8 million compared to the midweek withdrawals.
- For the full five-session week, the market ended with a net positive balance of only $6.1 million.
Issuer rankings remain tight
Although Fidelity led the final session, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust accumulated more capital over the entire week. The data shows IBIT gained $120.6 million across the five sessions, while Fidelity’s fund added $79.9 million. A single day of strong performance for Fidelity does not yet indicate a lasting shift in how investors allocate funds between these major providers.
Rate hike context
The major withdrawals occurred on September 15 and 16. These dates coincided with the Federal Reserve’s decision to raise its target interest rate range by 25 basis points to 3.75% and 4.00%. While the timing is notable, current data does not establish a direct causal link between the policy change and the subsequent outflows or the Friday rebound.
What happens next
Market participants are watching subsequent trading sessions to determine if Fidelity and smaller issuers continue to attract capital alongside BlackRock. For now, the evidence suggests that participation in Bitcoin ETFs has broadened slightly, keeping the weekly result from turning negative.
