Grayscale Says Crypto ETF Market Entering New Phase as Zcash ETF Surpasses $1 Billion

Zcash ETF Hits $1 Billion in Record Time

Grayscale's Zcash ETF gathered more than $1 billion in its first 30 trading days, reaching a milestone that puts it among the top 1% of ETFs launched in the past decade by assets raised in the first month, according to Krista Lynch, Grayscale's managing director of trading and capital markets. The rapid inflow comes as the broader crypto ETF market begins shifting beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum, the two digital assets that initially dominated the sector. Lynch said the move signals a maturing market where issuers are becoming more selective about which tokens can support investment products.

SEC Standards Open Door to More Tokens

Lynch told The Starting Block at Token2049 in Singapore that the SEC's generic listing standards now cover roughly 15 tokens, giving issuers more flexibility to choose which assets to launch funds around based on investor demand. In January, Grayscale listed 27 assets under consideration spanning AI, DeFi, consumer, and infrastructure categories.

Grayscale Looks Beyond Traditional ETFs

While expanding its ETF lineup, Grayscale is also pursuing tokenization. Last week, the firm filed to tokenize two of its 1940 Act products: a Bitcoin covered-call fund and an ether covered-call fund. The filing came after the SEC introduced an innovation exemption that Lynch described as a "consolation prize" following the failure of the Clarity Act, a broader crypto legislation effort. "Of course, we're upset or disappointed that Clarity didn't pass, but the fact that we've gotten over the milestone of it not passing has in some ways given more clarity, because it's not a question mark," Lynch said. Earlier this month, Grayscale joined several other crypto firms urging the SEC to speed up ETF reviews and allow confidential draft filings.

Investor Education Remains a Priority

Lynch noted that despite growing institutional interest, many potential investors still lack basic crypto knowledge. "Here at Token2049, everyone is very in the crypto bubble, but a lot of our conversations are, 'What is Bitcoin? What is Ethereum?'" she said. "You've got to start simple."

What Is Confirmed

Grayscale's Zcash ETF surpassed $1 billion in assets during its first 30 trading days, placing it in the top 1% of ETFs launched over the past decade by that measure, according to Lynch. The SEC's generic listing standards cover approximately 15 tokens. Grayscale filed to tokenize two covered-call funds under the SEC's innovation exemption. Grayscale had 27 assets under consideration as of January 2026.

What Remains Unclear

The source does not provide details on how much additional capital the Zcash ETF has attracted since the $1 billion milestone, nor does it confirm whether the Clarity Act's failure will slow or accelerate future ETF approvals.

Why This Matters for Investors

The expansion of crypto ETFs beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum suggests the market is moving toward broader asset coverage, though selectivity among issuers may limit which tokens gain institutional access. The tokenization filing signals Grayscale is exploring new structures beyond traditional funds, potentially offering investors different ways to gain exposure to digital assets.
