Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP Memecoin Price Falls 98% Following Debut

Hunter Biden's LAPTOP token price drops 98%

The LAPTOP memecoin, a cryptocurrency based on a cultural trend or joke, fell by as much as 98% from its starting price shortly after it was launched. The project's team stated that a combination of automated trading programs and low liquidity caused the price to spike and then crash rapidly.

Hunter Biden confirmed the token on social media earlier this week. The asset is named after the laptop he left at a repair shop in 2019, which has been a frequent topic of political discussion.

Important details of the market crash

  • The token launched at a price of 5 cents.
  • One trader lost approximately $199,000 during the price collapse.
  • The project team denies giving insiders any special advantage or early access to tokens.
  • Founders have 30% of the total supply locked for six months.

Project team blames automated bots and low liquidity

According to the development team, the crash happened because the initial liquidity was too small. Liquidity refers to the amount of funds available to allow people to buy and sell an asset without causing major price changes. Because there was not enough liquidity, a rush of automated buyers moved the price significantly.

The team specifically blamed "sniper bots," which are computer programs designed to buy new tokens the second they are released. These bots often get ahead of regular human traders, causing the price to jump and then fall just as quickly when the bots sell.

Blockchain data reveals heavy losses for early traders

Data from the blockchain analytics firm Nansen shows that many buyers have not yet sold their tokens despite the price drop. Nansen recorded over 46,000 buy transactions and about 16,000 sell transactions within the first 24 hours. While many traders are losing money, at least one address was reported to have about $13,000 in unrealized profit at the time the data was collected.

Even after the 98% drop, the token's market capitalization—the total value of all tokens in circulation—was estimated at $720 million. However, analysts noted that these numbers can be misleading for new tokens because very small trades can cause the price to look higher than it actually is when liquidity is thin.

New tokens to be added to liquidity pools

To address the price volatility and lack of trading funds, the team announced they will release 4 million additional tokens starting September 10. These tokens represent 0.4% of the total supply and will be used to encourage more trading activity in Aerodrome liquidity pools. The team also noted that another 30% of the supply is tied to a mechanism where tokens are either destroyed or sent to charity based on the outcome of certain events.
