Meanwhile Raises $37.5 Million for Bitcoin Life Insurance as Demand Surges
Sam Altman-backed Meanwhile adds $37.5 million to Bitcoin insurance raise
Bermuda-based Meanwhile, a life insurer that operates entirely in Bitcoin, announced it raised $37.5 million in new funding from existing investors. The round brings the company's total fundraising to more than $180 million.
The company, whose backers include OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, said the new capital follows growing international demand for its Bitcoin life insurance products, particularly from wealthy families in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
Key details of the funding round
- Bain Capital Crypto led the new investment round.
- Other participating investors include Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital.
- Meanwhile is licensed to operate as a life insurer in Bermuda.
- The company says net long-term underwriting income has already passed last year's total and is on track to more than double in 2026, though it did not disclose exact figures.
What the company says about growing demand
Zac Townsend, co-founder and CEO of Meanwhile, said in a statement that wealthy families worldwide already hold Bitcoin but have lacked a regulated way to pass it on. "Brokers came to us because their clients kept asking," Townsend said. "This round lets us keep up with them."
Meanwhile's product lineup
In early 2026, Meanwhile launched BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy aimed at high-net-worth clients outside the United States. This followed the launch of BTC 10-Pay, a separate product line designed for US taxpayers.
According to the company, policies can be owned by individuals, trusts, or companies, making them suitable for succession and estate planning purposes.
Why this matters for the crypto industry
The funding signals that institutional demand for regulated crypto insurance products is expanding beyond the United States. Meanwhile's focus on helping wealthy families pass on Bitcoin through traditional insurance structures suggests a growing market for products that bridge crypto assets with conventional financial planning.
What is still unclear
While Meanwhile reported strong revenue growth, the company did not provide specific figures for net long-term underwriting income. The scope of its operations in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, and how quickly demand may continue to grow, also remain unconfirmed.
