OpenLedger exec calls AI-powered payments crypto's first 'killer app' for AI

AI agents may use crypto for payments, says OpenLedger contributor

Ram Kumar, a core contributor at OpenLedger, believes that payments made by AI agents will be the first major use case—what he calls a “killer app”—for combining artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency.

Kumar explained that AI agents cannot open bank accounts or complete the identity checks known as KYC (Know Your Customer). Because of this, he said, crypto will be the easiest way for these agents to send and receive money.

“The natural way for an agent to use and transact, at least in the next few years, will be crypto,” Kumar told The Block at the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium 2026.

Key details from Kumar’s comments

  • AI agents cannot create bank accounts or complete KYC checks, making crypto the simplest payment option.
  • Agent-driven trading is expected to be the next major AI use case in crypto.
  • OpenLedger plans to expand from business customers to everyday consumers in the next two years.
  • The company wants to let non-technical users build and customize their own AI models without coding.

What OpenLedger is building

OpenLedger focuses on creating infrastructure that supports AI applications. The company raised $8 million in a seed round led by Polychain Capital and Borderless Capital in 2024. Last November, it launched OPEN Mainnet, a blockchain designed to track where AI data comes from and to distribute rewards to contributors.

Kumar described blockchain as a service layer for AI, not the main product. He said it helps with privacy, making data sources clear, and distributing rewards fairly.

OpenLedger also supports open-source AI models. The company wants to make it possible for anyone to build and fine-tune their own AI models without needing to write code.

What is confirmed

  • Ram Kumar is a core contributor at OpenLedger.
  • He stated that AI agents will likely use crypto for payments because they cannot open bank accounts or complete KYC.
  • OpenLedger raised $8 million in a seed round in 2024.
  • The company launched OPEN Mainnet in November 2025.
  • OpenLedger plans to expand its AI platform to consumers in the next two years.

What is still unclear

  • No specific timeline was given for when AI agents will widely use crypto for payments.
  • It is not clear how quickly agent-driven trading will become common.
  • The exact features of OpenLedger’s consumer platform have not been detailed.

Why this could matter for crypto and AI

If AI agents start using crypto for payments, it could increase the use of digital currencies. This would give crypto a practical role in everyday AI activities, not just trading or investing.

For AI developers, blockchain could help solve problems like data privacy and reward distribution. OpenLedger’s focus on open-source models and no-code tools could make AI more accessible to non-experts.
