Optimism's OP Token Surges 18%, Marking a Sixty-Six Percent Rally Over Four Weeks

OP Token Leads Crypto Gains Amid Volatile Rally

Optimism's OP token rose nearly 18% on October 13, pushing its four-week gain to approximately 66%. The jump came as Bitcoin and Ethereum posted much smaller moves over the same period.

According to CoinGecko data, OP traded at $0.1595 at 5 p.m. ET on October 13, up from $0.1353 the day before. Over that same 24-hour window, Bitcoin gained about 0.4% and Ethereum slipped 0.3%, based on calculations by The Defiant.

How OP Stacks Up Against Major Tokens

  • OP gained roughly 21% over seven days, while Bitcoin fell 2.6% and Ethereum dropped 7%.
  • Over 28 days, Bitcoin rose about 9.8% and Ethereum gained 4.3%, both trailing OP's 66% advance.
  • OP also outperformed Arbitrum's ARB token, which fell 6.3% over seven days but gained 30.6% over 28 days.
  • Starknet's STRK posted a larger rally, climbing about 64% in seven days and 211% over 28 days.

The Rally Was Not Smooth

OP's recent gains came after a period of turbulence. The token retreated from roughly $0.146 in late September to about $0.120 on October 7 before recovering toward its current level around 16 cents.

What OP Does in the Optimism Ecosystem

OP carries a governance role in the Optimism network. According to the Optimism Foundation, holders can vote on proposals or delegate their tokens to representatives. Token House members vote on OP Stack upgrades, which the Security Council then implements. The OP Stack is the open-source software that powers the Optimism blockchain and other networks built on top of it.

What This Shows About the Layer-2 Market

The performance data highlights a wide divergence among layer-2 tokens, which are blockchain networks built on top of Ethereum to help process transactions faster and cheaper. OP, ARB, and STRK all posted different results over matching time periods, suggesting that market interest in these tokens is not moving in lockstep with each other or with Bitcoin and Ethereum.

The source notes that these comparisons cover selected tokens and do not represent a full ranking of the layer-2 market. All returns use CoinGecko price data at 5 p.m. ET on the specified dates.
