Router Protocol to shut down on Sept. 30, 2026 and burn 303 million ROUTE tokens
Router Protocol to shut down on Sept. 30, 2026
Router Protocol posted a notice on Sept. 4 stating that it will cease all operations by Sept. 30, 2026 and will permanently destroy 303,333,198 ROUTE tokens held in its treasury.
Key numbers
- Shutdown date: Sept. 30, 2026
- Planned token burn: 303,333,198 ROUTE
- Current total value locked (TVL) reported by DefiLlama: $9,879.92, with $9,837.37 on Aurora
- No bridge volume in the last 30 days
What the notice says
The notice only gives explicit withdrawal instructions for ROUTE held on centralized exchanges (CEX). Holders must follow each exchange’s delisting notice and withdraw before the exchange’s deadline. No separate deadline is provided for assets in bridge contracts or liquidity‑provider positions.
On‑chain data matching the burn amount
CoinGecko lists three Ethereum addresses under the allocations “Ecosystem 60 % + Foundation 30 % + Team 10 %.” Each address holds 101,111,066 ROUTE, totaling 303,333,198 ROUTE – the exact amount the project plans to burn. The notice does not confirm that the burn will be taken from these wallets.
Bridge activity has fallen to zero
DefiLlama shows that Router Protocol’s TVL is now under $10 k and that there has been no bridge volume for the past 30 days, a sharp decline from $515.93 million recorded since tracking began. Aurora accounts for 99.6 % of the tracked TVL. The notice does not give bridge users a specific withdrawal timetable.
Why the shutdown matters
Router attributes the wind‑down to thin bridge economics: fewer active chains, commoditized routes, and fees that no longer cover infrastructure costs. The team also said that a year of exploring commercialization, licensing, and acquisition talks did not produce a sustainable outcome. All protocol fees have been used for ROUTE buybacks and burns rather than building a treasury reserve.
