Solana sets Oct. 21 for Alpenglow upgrade targeting 150-millisecond finality

Oct. 21 launch date locked in for Alpenglow

Solana has set Oct. 21 as the activation date for its Alpenglow upgrade, according to an updated timetable published by the Solana Foundation. The upgrade replaces TowerBFT, the validator voting system the network has used since its launch in 2020.

Alpenglow targets transaction finality in roughly 150 milliseconds. Finality means a payment is confirmed irreversible. The 150-millisecond figure is a target; actual performance will depend on network conditions.

How the new voting system works

Currently, validators — the computers that check transactions and help secure Solana — submit their votes as transactions recorded on the blockchain. Under Alpenglow, validators will exchange votes directly and combine enough approvals into a certificate that finalizes a block after one or two voting rounds.

A merchant waiting for payment assurance or a bridge releasing funds on another blockchain could act sooner with this faster finality guarantee.

Transaction counts may drop sharply

The change will remove validator votes from blocks. That means Solana's headline transaction count could fall sharply on activation day, even if people continue trading and making payments at the same pace. The drop would reflect a technical shift, not a decline in user activity.

Validator software requirements

Validators must use Agave 4.3.0 for the migration. Operators of Firedancer and Frankendancer, alternative programs used to run validators, will not support the initial migration and will need to switch to Agave temporarily.

Fee changes for validators

Removing vote transactions changes what validators pay. Their current voting charges of roughly 1 SOL per epoch will disappear. An epoch is a period during which Solana assigns validators their network responsibilities. The new cost is a flat admission fee of 0.8 SOL per epoch.

Migration timing

The migration is scheduled for epoch 1064, expected to begin around 15:00 UTC on Oct. 21.

What is confirmed

The Oct. 21 date, the replacement of TowerBFT, the removal of vote transactions from blocks, the 150-millisecond finality target, the requirement for Agave 4.3.0, and the fee change from ~1 SOL to 0.8 SOL per epoch are all confirmed by the Solana Foundation's published timetable as reported by CoinDesk.

What is still unclear

The actual transaction finality time will depend on network conditions and may differ from the 150-millisecond target. It is also unconfirmed how large the drop in reported transaction counts will be.

Why this matters

Faster finality gives merchants and cross-chain bridges stronger assurance that a payment cannot be reversed, potentially allowing them to act on transactions more quickly. The removal of vote transactions from blocks also means on-chain metrics like transaction count will look different after the upgrade, even if real usage does not change.

What happens next

Validators must upgrade to Agave 4.3.0 before the Oct. 21 migration. Firedancer and Frankendancer operators must prepare to switch software temporarily. The upgrade activates during epoch 1064 around 15:00 UTC.
