Stripe and Plasma Partner to Build Multi-Currency Stablecoin Cards

Stripe and Plasma Announce Multi-Currency Stablecoin Card Partnership

Stripe and Plasma announced a partnership on Oct. 15 to co-develop stablecoin-backed payment cards that support multiple currencies. A stablecoin is a digital currency designed to hold a steady value, typically pegged to a government currency like the US dollar.

Under the collaboration, Plasma will move its card operations onto Stripe's infrastructure. The two companies described building cards that allow users to spend directly in euros without first converting through US dollars. Businesses would be able to issue cards in the currencies that match their actual spending needs, which could reduce unnecessary foreign-exchange conversions.

Stripe said its stablecoin card infrastructure is currently available in more than 30 countries, with plans to expand to over 100 countries in 2027. No launch date was given for the new Plasma cards.

Key Details of the Offering

  • The partnership builds on Plasma One, a stablecoin neobank launched in September 2025.
  • Supported currencies include USD, BRL (Brazilian real), EUR, MXN (Mexican peso), and COP (Colombian peso).
  • Eligible stablecoins include USDC, OUSD, and GENIUS-compliant stablecoins, according to Stripe.
  • Plasma's CEO Paul Faecks called the multi-currency card development the "first step" in the partnership.
  • Automatic selection between a cardholder's currency balances at checkout was described as a future development goal, not an immediate feature.
  • Neither company disclosed the settlement blockchain or the exact fiat-conversion flow for the new cards.

What the Companies Said

In its announcement, Stripe framed the product around how people actually live and spend across different currencies. Plasma said it is moving to Stripe's stablecoin card infrastructure to help shape the design.

Stripe's general issuing offering combines its card infrastructure with Bridge, a stablecoin services platform. Bridge states that its card programs can settle in either fiat currency or stablecoins, though the partners have not detailed how the new Plasma cards will handle settlement.

Competitor Activity

On the same day, Mastercard and BVNK announced the Global Money Platform, a separate multi-currency offering that links stablecoin accounts to Mastercard payment rails. That platform supports conversion, stablecoin-linked cards, and local bank payouts through a single API, and Mastercard said it is available immediately through BVNK.

Why This Matters

The partnership signals that major payments infrastructure providers are expanding stablecoin card capabilities beyond US dollars. For consumers and businesses that operate across multiple currencies, multi-currency stablecoin cards could simplify cross-border spending by reducing the number of currency conversions required.

What Is Still Unclear

  • No launch date has been announced for the Plasma multi-currency cards.
  • The settlement blockchain and fiat-conversion mechanics have not been disclosed.
  • It is not yet clear when or whether automatic currency balance selection at checkout will become available.
