UAE National Security Advisor Takes 49% Stake in Trump Family Bank Venture

UAE National Security Advisor invests in Trump family bank

Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan, the national security advisor of the United Arab Emirates, has taken a 49% stake in a holding company linked to the Trump family's banking venture. According to reports, the Sheikh and a group of investors acquired this share in the company created by World Liberty Financial to seek a federal bank charter.

The investment was made through an entity called StringZ Holding RSC. This entity now holds a major portion of WLTC Holdings, which is the parent company of the venture's banking arm.

Key details of the investment

  • Sheikh Tahnoon and co-investors hold a 49% stake in the bank's holding company.
  • The investment reportedly totaled $500 million.
  • World Liberty Financial issues a stablecoin called USD1. A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency designed to stay at a fixed value, such as one U.S. dollar.
  • The USD1 stablecoin has a market value of $4 billion, making it the fourth-largest in its category.

White House response to conflict of interest claims

White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly stated there are no conflicts of interest regarding the investment. She said that President Trump acts in the best interests of the American public. Kelly also dismissed previous accusations against the president and his businesses.

The statement was issued following reports that the investment occurred shortly before President Trump's inauguration. Critics have frequently pointed to potential conflicts of interest involving the Trump family's business dealings with foreign officials.

Current status of the bank charter

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) recently gave preliminary approval for the venture to become a national trust bank. The entity is officially known as the World Liberty Trust Company, National Association.

Earlier this year, World Liberty Financial formed this trust company specifically to get a banking license. This license would allow the business to handle various financial services directly under federal regulation.

What World Liberty Financial plans to offer

The company intends to provide several services for digital assets. These include issuing and redeeming stablecoins and offering "on-ramp" and "off-ramp" services, which allow users to trade between traditional cash and crypto.

The venture also plans to offer custody and conversion services. Custody refers to the secure storage of digital assets for customers. These services are intended to integrate digital finance more closely with traditional banking.

Political scrutiny and investigations

The investment has drawn attention from lawmakers in Washington. Top Senate Democrats have asked Republican leaders to hold hearings on the matter. In the House of Representatives, some members have also raised concerns about the funding.

In February, Representative Ro Khanna started an investigation into money sent to World Liberty Financial from the UAE royal family. These officials are looking into whether the financial ties create risks or require more oversight.
