VanEck launches a diversified ETF with up to 5% Bitcoin exposure

VanEck launches an actively managed fund mixing stocks, bonds and Bitcoin

US asset manager VanEck has launched a new exchange-traded fund that combines stocks, bonds and real assets with a small allocation to Bitcoin.

The fund is the VanEck Wealth Builder ETF, trading on the NYSE under the ticker WBMO. It was introduced in a Tuesday announcement.

An ETF, or exchange-traded fund, is a basket of investments that trades on a stock exchange like a single share. This one is actively managed, meaning VanEck decides how much to hold in each part and adjusts the mix over time.

What the fund holds

The fund invests in other VanEck and third-party ETFs. Its main holdings cover global stocks, bonds, gold and other real assets.

Bitcoin makes up a small part of the mix. The target allocation is 2%, with an allowed range of 1% to 5%.

VanEck says the Bitcoin exposure comes through a spot Bitcoin ETP, not by the fund holding the cryptocurrency directly. An ETP is a product that tracks the price of an asset. A spot ETP follows the current, or "spot," price of Bitcoin.

Who is behind the strategy

The ETF builds on VanEck's existing Wealth Builder model portfolios, which financial advisers could already access through third-party wealth management platforms.

David Schassler, VanEck's head of multi-asset solutions, said the traditional mix of 60% stocks and 40% bonds was built for a different investment environment. Adding real assets alongside stocks and bonds, he said, could help investors cope with a wider range of economic conditions.

The launch follows a March partnership between VanEck and retirement platform Basic Capital. That deal made some of VanEck's digital asset ETFs available through US employer-sponsored 401(k) plans.

VanEck said it managed about $244.1 billion in assets as of Sept. 30.

Key points

  • VanEck launched the Wealth Builder ETF, listed on the NYSE under the ticker WBMO.

  • It is an actively managed fund that holds stocks, bonds, gold and other real assets through other ETFs.

  • Bitcoin exposure is set at a 2% target, within a 1% to 5% allowed range.

  • Bitcoin exposure comes via a spot Bitcoin ETP rather than direct Bitcoin holdings.

  • The product extends VanEck's existing Wealth Builder model portfolios used by financial advisers.

What is confirmed

According to the company, VanEck launched the VanEck Wealth Builder ETF (WBMO) with a 2% target Bitcoin allocation, a permitted range of 1% to 5%, and exposure delivered through a spot Bitcoin ETP. VanEck manages roughly $244.1 billion in assets and has a prior 401(k) partnership with Basic Capital.

What is still unclear

The source article does not state the fund's expense ratio, when investors can first trade it, or how large the initial offering is.

Why this matters for investors

By packaging Bitcoin exposure inside a broadly diversified, actively managed ETF, VanEck offers investors a way to add a small amount of cryptocurrency to a traditional stock-and-bond portfolio without buying or storing the coin themselves.
