Ethereum’s transformation into a cryptographic world computer

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has released a new vision for the network's future, stating that it is no longer just a blockchain. In a blog post published Sunday, Buterin described a hybrid architecture that will combine traditional blockchain design with advanced modern cryptography by 2030. A blockchain is a digital ledger that records transactions across a network of computers.

Buterin explained that the network is moving toward a model he calls the "cryptographic world computer." This shift involves replacing almost every major part of the current protocol with more efficient technologies. This multi-year rebuild, known as "Lean Ethereum," aims to significantly improve network performance and security.

Key targets for the 2030 roadmap

• The network aims to achieve block times, or slots, of 4 to 8 seconds.
• Transaction finality, the point where a block cannot be reversed, is targeted for 8 to 32 seconds.
• Future upgrades will focus on quantum-safe cryptography to protect against potential attacks from future quantum computers.

Insights from the ‘cryptographic world computer’ essay

Buterin noted that many core ideas from the original Bitcoin whitepaper are changing. He stated that modern tools now allow a decentralized network to improve performance instead of just increasing technical costs. For example, instead of every computer on the network downloading every piece of data, they can use "sampling" to verify information through a feature called PeerDAS.

The roadmap also includes the use of STARKs and SNARKs. These are short cryptographic proofs that allow one computer to prove to another that a calculation was done correctly without showing all the underlying data. Buterin believes these technologies will make Ethereum much more powerful than early designs allowed, helping the network hide metadata and increase privacy.

Confirmed technical milestones and timelines

The Fusaka upgrade, which introduced the PeerDAS data-sampling feature, was released in December 2025. The next major upgrade, called Glamsterdam, is currently expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2026. This follows a previous estimate that suggested the upgrade would launch in the first half of that year.

Following Glamsterdam, the Hegota upgrade is planned for 2027. Buterin identified Hegota as likely the last "normal" network fork. After this, the network will shift toward automated formal verification, which uses mathematical proofs to ensure code works as intended, and recursive STARKs, which are proofs used to verify other proofs.

Practical importance of the upcoming changes

The transition to "Lean Ethereum" is expected to take three to four years in total. While the network itself may not reach the same transaction speeds as centralized servers, Buterin noted that infrastructure built on top of Ethereum could compete with those speeds. The upcoming Hegota upgrade will also introduce features like "fork-choice enforced inclusion lists" (FOCIL) to help prevent transaction censorship by allowing multiple participants to build blocks.
