What the AIIMS examinations are
Each All India Institute of Medical Sciences runs its own admissions, and the institute runs several national-level examinations across its network. The undergraduate and postgraduate courses have their own entrance papers, and the Nursing Officer Recruitment Common Eligibility Test, NORCET, is the single common nursing recruitment examination used across the AIIMS group and is administered through the common assessment and examination portal.
The specification is identical across all four streams in this record, the BSc nursing paper, the postgraduate paper, the main AIIMS exam and NORCET, which means a single pair of files can be reused across them. Two things are worth noting. The signature box is 6 by 3 centimetres, which is wider and deeper than the common 3.5 by 1.5 centimetre figure used elsewhere on this site, and a third upload is required: a left thumb impression at 4 by 3 centimetres, made on paper and validated separately from the portrait.
The board publishes its notices at aiimsexams.ac.in. The numbers on this page come from the recorded specification, and the notice on that site is the authority whenever the two differ.
This page sets out the numbers AIIMS actually asks for. It is not a general guide to cropping or to the tool interface, because those instructions do not change from one exam to the next and they are written up separately.
What the AIIMS form asks you to upload
There are 3 uploads on this application. Missing any single one of them stops the form from being accepted, so it is worth preparing the lot before you start filling it in. They are:
- A photograph at 3.5 x 4.5 cm, no heavier than 100 KB and no lighter than 50 KB.
- A signature at 6 x 3 cm, no heavier than 50 KB and no lighter than 10 KB.
- A left thumb impression at 4 x 3 cm, up to 50 KB.

The AIIMS numbers, and why they matter
Notice that the AIIMS figures are measurements in centimetres, not pixels. At 200 DPI a 3.5 by 4.5 centimetre frame is a specific pixel count, and the tool derives it rather than guessing. A photo that is the right number of pixels but the wrong DPI reads as the wrong size to a portal that checks both.
There are two limits to satisfy for AIIMS, not one. The upper bound on the photograph is 100 KB and the lower bound is 50 KB; the signature runs 10 KB to 50 KB. Compression that overshoots is easy to fix by lowering quality again, but a file under the floor cannot be fixed by compressing further, it needs a larger source image.
The AIIMS record offers 4 photograph options and 4 signature options: 3.5 x 4.5 cm. These come from different notifications and different recruitment streams rather than from one form, so there is no single right answer to which to use. Take the size from the advertisement you are actually applying under, and if it names a size that is not listed here, enter it by hand in the width and height fields.
The AIIMS form asks for one document image beyond the photograph and signature: 4 x 3 cm at up to 50 KB; 4 x 3 cm at up to 50 KB; 4 x 3 cm at up to 50 KB; 4 x 3 cm at up to 50 KB. Each is validated separately, so a correct portrait does not offset a document that falls outside its own specification.
If the AIIMS application refuses your file
- A AIIMS rejection usually comes down to one of two things. Either the file is over 100 KB because the crop left too much empty background, or the photo itself has a non plain background, a tilt, or a filter. Fix the weight first since it is measurable, then the photograph.
- For the AIIMS signature, keep the crop tight around the ink. The 6 x 3 cm frame is small, so every extra millimetre of empty paper is weight you do not have, and the 50 KB ceiling does not leave room for it.
- Two identical rejections usually mean the specification moved rather than the file. Compare the table above against the current notification before you generate a third attempt.
Frequently Asked Questions
The mechanics of the crop step, the face mask overlay, and the compression trade-off are identical across all of these tools, so they have their own guide instead of a section on every page. Read the shared photo and signature guide.
