What the Driving Licence photo is for

The driving licence photograph is the portrait submitted through the Sarathi service on the Parivahan portal, used for a learner's licence, a permanent licence and most of the related applications handled by state transport departments. The form is filled online, the photograph and signature are uploaded with it, and the same image is printed on the licence that is issued later, which is why a casual selfie tends to cause a rejection at the counter even when the upload itself was accepted.

The stored row is a 3.5 by 4.5 cm portrait at 200 dpi, between 20 and 50 KB, JPEG. That ceiling is much tighter than the ones used for Aadhaar or the electoral roll, so a modern phone photograph has to be cropped and compressed rather than simply resized. Keep the face centred with the head and shoulders in frame, use a plain light background, and check the file weight after saving: a crop that looks correct on screen can still sit a few kilobytes over the limit.

The Driving Licence numbers, and why they matter

The Driving Licence specification is physical: the table is in centimetres and the resolution requirement is 200 DPI. This is the case where resizing by eye in a phone gallery usually goes wrong, because the same measurement maps to different pixel counts depending on the DPI it is saved at.

Driving Licence sets a floor as well as a ceiling. The photograph has to land between 20 KB and 50 KB. A file far below the minimum can fail the portal check even though it is technically under the limit, which is why the tool exposes a minimum field next to the maximum.

If the Driving Licence application refuses your file

• A Driving Licence rejection usually comes down to one of two things. Either the file is over 50 KB because the crop left too much empty background, or the photo itself has a non plain background, a tilt, or a filter. Fix the weight first since it is measurable, then the photograph.
• If the same file is refused twice with identical settings, stop retrying and re-read the guidelines. Requirements do get revised by corrigendum, and the numbers stored in this tool reflect the specification as recorded.
