JPG to GIF Image Converter

Convert JPG photos into single-frame GIF files for platforms, templates and avatar slots that only take GIF. The server reduces the picture to GIF's 256-colour palette, can resize it by pixel, percent or print units first, and returns a downloadable .gif you can also copy as Base64. Best for flat graphics and logos; photos may show banding and can grow in size.

Turning a photograph into a GIF

JPG and GIF were both born in the early web, but they were built for opposite jobs. JPG stores millions of colours and saves space by quietly discarding detail the eye is unlikely to miss, which makes it ideal for photographs. GIF stores at most 256 colours per frame in an indexed palette, compresses them without further loss, and can hold several frames for simple animation. That makes GIF a good fit for logos, flat icons, small diagrams and short loops, and a poor fit for a sunset or a portrait.

The JPG to GIF Image Converter on this page takes your JPG and writes it out as a .gif file on our server. It is useful when a website builder, a forum avatar slot, a legacy content system or an old email template only accepts GIF, or when you are preparing a still frame that you will later combine with others in an animation program.

What to expect from the output

Squeezing a full-colour photo into 256 colours always changes it. Smooth gradients such as skies, skin and shadows may show visible bands or a fine speckled dither pattern, because the converter has to approximate colours it can no longer store. Sharp graphics with only a few flat colours survive almost perfectly.

File size behaves differently from what many people expect. GIF compression works best on large areas of identical colour. A busy photograph has very few of those, so a GIF of a photo is frequently larger than the JPG it came from, even after the colour count drops. If the result card shows an up arrow next to the new weight, that is the reason. For simple artwork the opposite usually happens and the GIF comes out compact.

One more point: a JPG holds a single still image, so the GIF you get is a single still image too. This page does not build animations from several JPGs; it converts each file on its own.

Is GIF really the right target?

The settings panel explained for GIF output

Everything lives in the collapsible Configuration card at the top. On this page Convert Format is preselected as GIF, so you can upload and process without touching it.

The Quality slider (10% to 100%, default 75%) is shared by all formats on the site. It strongly affects JPEG and WEBP, but GIF has no comparable quality dial: the palette limit is what shapes the result. Moving the slider here has little or no visible effect, so do not rely on it to shrink a GIF.

What does reduce a GIF is making it smaller in pixels. Choose a Resize Unit such as Pixel or Percent and fill in the Dimensions fields. A banner at 600 pixels wide instead of 3000 is many times lighter. The DPI field is available too, though GIF is a screen format and most software ignores resolution metadata inside it.

Converting JPG to GIF in practice

Here is the workflow most people follow:

  1. Decide the final width. For a forum avatar that might be 200 pixels; for a newsletter header perhaps 600.
  2. Set Resize Unit to Pixel and type only the Width. Leaving Height empty lets the server calculate it from the original proportions.
  3. Add your JPG files in the Select Images area by dragging them onto the dashed box or clicking Select File.
  4. Each file becomes a card in the Upload Queue with a thumbnail, its size, its pixel dimensions and a Queued status.
  5. Press Process on one card or Process Queue for all of them.
  6. When the status reads Done, look at the output thumbnail. Click it for a full-size preview and check gradients for banding.
  7. Press Download to save the GIF.

A note about the file picker

The upload box on this page is set to JPEG images, so your system's file dialog lists your JPG and JPEG files straight away. You can also drag files from a folder onto the upload box.

Working with images that are already online

If the JPG is on a website you can reach, press From URL beside the queue, paste one address per line into the Image URLs box and press Process to add them as cards. The server fetches each picture itself. Results from URLs come back without the original file name, so rename them after download. Clear All empties the queue when you want a fresh start, and the small cross on any card removes just that file.

Tips for cleaner GIFs from photos

  • Shrink first. Fewer pixels mean fewer places for dithering to show and a much smaller file.
  • Prefer images with strong, flat areas of colour: product cut-outs on white, simple graphics, text badges.
  • Avoid converting low-quality JPGs. JPEG block artefacts introduce many slightly different colours, and the palette reduction then makes them more obvious.
  • Keep your original JPG. Once colours are reduced to 256, there is no way back to the full range from the GIF.

Things to avoid

  • Do not convert portraits or landscape photos to GIF for a normal website. You lose colour and usually gain weight.
  • Do not expect transparency. A JPG has no transparent pixels, so the GIF will have a solid background wherever the photo had one.
  • Do not expect the converter to create motion. Making an animated GIF requires an animation editor that combines several frames.
  • Do not send images you are not allowed to share with a third party; the file is processed on our server.

Limits enforced by the tool

  • Uploads up to 10 MB per file, in JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WEBP, JIFF or BMP format.
  • Width, Height and DPI must be whole numbers of at least 1.
  • Percent, Inch, Centimeter and Millimeter sizes work reliably only when both Width and Height are filled.
  • One set of settings is applied to every file processed together. A failure on any single file in a batch run stops the batch with an error message.
  • Metadata such as camera details and location is stripped from the output, and the picture is rotated upright according to its orientation tag.
  • No crop, rotate, flip or zoom tools are included here.

Where processing happens

This converter does not run in your browser. Each image is uploaded to our server, decoded and encoded by a server-side image library, then returned to the page as Base64 data. The server deletes its temporary copy after building the response. The Copy Base64 button on each finished card copies that data URL, which can be handy for embedding a tiny GIF straight into HTML or CSS.

Frequently Asked Questions

پرسش‌های متداول

پاسخ‌های کوتاه به پرسش‌هایی که کاربران پیش از اعتماد به نتیجه مطرح می‌کنند.

GIF can store only 256 colours, while a JPG photo may use millions. The converter has to approximate the missing shades, which shows up as bands or a dotted dither in skies, skin and shadows.

GIF compression is efficient on flat colour areas and weak on detailed photographs. A photo converted to GIF is often heavier than the JPG. Reduce the pixel dimensions to bring the size down.

Very little. The slider is designed for lossy formats like JPEG and WEBP. For GIF the 256-colour palette determines the look, so resizing is the effective way to change file weight.

No. Each JPG is converted into its own single-frame GIF. To build an animation you need an editor that combines frames and sets timing.

The upload box on this page is set to JPEG images, so the file dialog lists your .jpg and .jpeg files. You can also drag a JPG from a folder onto the upload box.

No. JPG has no transparency, so there is nothing to carry over. The background of the photo stays as solid pixels in the GIF.

The server accepts uploads up to 10 MB per file. Bigger files are rejected before conversion starts.
