What this page does

This page converts a GIF to PNG. The output opens on PNG, and you can add several files, adjust quality and optionally resize. The server writes a PNG for each upload and returns a download.

The important detail is animation. A GIF can contain several frames with timing information; the PNG output is a still image. If the source is animated, do not expect the motion to survive. The conversion gives you one frame, not a frame sequence.

Why convert GIF to PNG

PNG is lossless and supports smooth transparency. It is a better editing format than GIF: you can open it in a modern editor, keep the pixels intact and save a new version without another palette reduction.

PNG is also more widely accepted by design tools, document templates and print workflows. If a GIF needs to go into a report, a slide deck or an image editor, PNG is often the cleaner handoff.

The trade-off is size. A PNG can be several times larger than the GIF, especially for a photographic frame. Keep the GIF if the destination only needs the small animated file.

Which frame do you get?

The converter treats the GIF as an image and writes a still PNG. The exact frame depends on how the source is decoded; it is commonly the first frame or the currently composed frame. Do not rely on a specific frame unless you have tested the file.

If you need a later frame, extract it with a dedicated animation tool first, then convert that still. This page is not a frame picker and does not show a timeline.

Transparency and edges

GIF transparency is binary: a pixel is fully transparent or fully opaque. PNG can store partial alpha. The conversion can keep the transparent areas, but it cannot invent the soft edges that GIF discarded. A logo may still show a hard fringe if the original GIF had one.

Check the PNG on the background where it will be used. A transparent GIF designed for white can look rough on dark green, and the conversion will not fix a matte that was baked into the source.

Colour

GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame. PNG can store millions, but it cannot restore colours that were already removed. The PNG preserves the reduced palette faithfully; it does not make the image look like the original photo.

If the GIF was made from a flat graphic, the PNG will look clean. If it was made from a photo, the banding and dithering remain. Rebuilding from the original photo is the only way to recover the full colour.

Batch workflow

Add the files, keep PNG selected, set any resize options and process. Each file is handled separately, and there is no ZIP bundle. Download the results one by one.

Test one animated file and one still file before converting a mixed batch. The animated one will lose its motion; the still one should look the same apart from size and any palette limits.

Limits and privacy

Files are uploaded to the server for conversion. Do not send private photos or identity documents to a public converter. The page does not offer a local-only mode.

Large images and long batches can hit upload or memory limits. Keep the GIF originals until the PNGs have been checked, and resize before conversion if the destination does not need full dimensions.

Editing a still from a GIF

A PNG still is easier to edit than a GIF. You can open it in a photo editor, retouch a small area, add text or place it on a new background without fighting a palette. Save the edited result as PNG or export a JPEG for delivery.

If the GIF was animated, decide which moment you need before converting. The page does not show a timeline or let you choose a frame. Extract the exact frame in an animation tool first if the choice matters.

PNG for documents and print

PNG is a good handoff for reports, slides and design files because it is lossless and widely supported. It keeps hard edges and flat colour clean, which suits logos, diagrams and screenshots.

For print, remember that PNG does not add resolution. A small GIF frame converted to PNG is still small. Set the physical size and DPI in the layout, and start with enough pixels if the print will be large.

Common problems

A PNG may be much larger than the GIF, especially for a photographic frame. A transparent logo may show a hard fringe that was already present in the GIF. A later frame may be the one you wanted, but the converter returned an earlier one.

Check size, transparency and frame content before using the PNG. If any of them is wrong, go back to the GIF or the original source rather than editing the wrong frame.

GIF colour tables and what PNG keeps

A GIF frame carries a colour table of up to 256 entries. The PNG keeps the pixels that were mapped to those entries, so the visual result is the same reduced palette. It does not carry the table forward as a limitation; it simply stores the already-reduced colours.

That is why a PNG made from a GIF can look posterised. The fix is not another conversion but a better source: the original photo, illustration or design file. If the GIF is the only copy, the PNG is as good as it gets.

When to keep the GIF

Keep the GIF if the destination needs animation or a very small flat graphic. The PNG is for editing, transparency work or a still handoff. Do not delete the GIF until the PNG has been accepted, because the animation cannot be rebuilt from a still.

Keeping a record

Note which GIF and which frame the PNG came from. If a client asks for a different moment later, the note saves you from guessing. Keep the GIF until the PNG has been accepted, because the still cannot rebuild the animation.

Keep the note with the file so the next person can trace the still back to its original GIF and exact frame. Save it. Always.

Resizing the PNG while you convert

The Resize Unit menu starts on No Resize, which keeps the GIF's own pixel dimensions. Pick a unit and two fields appear for width and height. The menu offers pixels, percent, inches, centimetres and millimetres.

Fill in both fields

For an uploaded file, an empty width or height is not left blank. The page fills it with the GIF's original size in that direction. If a 400 by 300 GIF gets a width of 200 and no height, the PNG comes out 200 by 300 and the picture is squashed. To keep the proportions, work out the second value yourself. The original size is shown on each file card in the queue, so 200 wide means 150 high for that GIF.

  • Pixels: the PNG is written at exactly the width and height entered. A different ratio stretches the image; it is never cropped.
  • Percent: 50 and 50 gives a PNG at half the width and half the height of the source.
  • Inches, centimetres or millimetres: the size is turned into pixels using the DPI box, or 96 DPI when that box is empty.

Enlarging a small GIF with these fields gives a bigger PNG but no extra detail. The reduced palette and dithering are scaled up with it. For a sharp result at a larger size, rebuild the graphic from its source file.

Other settings worth knowing

The format menu is not fixed to PNG. It also lists JPG, WEBP, BMP and other choices, plus Keep Original, so the same page can produce another format when a destination needs one. Each uploaded file can be up to 10 MB. The server rejects a larger file instead of converting it.

No. The output is a still image. Use a dedicated animation tool if you need every frame.

The converter decodes the GIF as an image and writes one still. It does not offer a frame picker; test the file if the exact frame matters.

No. It preserves the colours left in the GIF. If the GIF was reduced to 256 colours, the PNG keeps that reduced palette.

The transparent areas can survive, but GIF has no soft alpha. Hard edges stay hard.

PNG is lossless and usually stores more data than GIF. A photographic frame can grow several times over.

Yes. Add multiple files and process the batch.

No. Download each result separately.

Yes, for processing. Avoid public converters for private images.

Width and height are applied exactly. If you fill in only one of them for an uploaded file, the other keeps the GIF's original value, which changes the shape. Enter both values in the same ratio as the original size shown on the file card.

Each uploaded file can be up to 10 MB. The server rejects a larger file, so trim or shrink very large GIFs before converting them.
